    Hello,

I am trying to get my daughter's computer to run at a reasonable speed again. I have followed the instructions for scanning for malware and have scan logs to submit. This is a home office machine. I run a small business and my daughter manages the office for me, so this computer gets used for business as well as her personal use. I do not know what caused this machine to slow down but it takes a long time to boot and to load programs.

I will try to attach the first 4 logs with this post and the next 3 afterwards. Any help you can offer will be appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Dave

Hi and welcome to Major Geeks, defuller!

    Code:
    Path: Volume H:\

Leave the above external drive plugged in for now and run the following scans:

http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/3557/tdsskiller.gif I want you to read and follow these instructions: TDSSKiller - How to run

http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/6703/generalxpicon.gif Please download MBRCheck by clicking here and save it to your desktop.

    • Double-click on the file to run it. (Vista/7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
    • A window will open on your desktop.
    • If an unknown bootcode is found you will have further options available to you, at this time press N then press Enter twice.
    • If nothing unusual is found just press Enter.
    • A .txt file named MBRCheck_mm.dd.yy_hh.mm.txt should appear on your desktop.
    • Attach this file to your next message. (How to attach)

Also, do you have your Windows XP boot CD? We may need it to restore a clean MBR.

You have some Lavasoft Ad-Aware drivers still running in memory too, even though Ad-Aware is not installed. This could be slowing the PC down too.

I am not seeing any actual malware in your logs other than that potential MBR infection on the external drive.

Complete the above scans and also run this one:

http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/1894/otl.gif Please download OTL by OldTimer.

    • Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the OTL icon on your desktop. (Vista/7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
    • Check the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
    • Check the "Standard Output".
    • Change the setting of "Drivers" and "Services" to "All"
    • Copy the text in the code box below and paste it into the http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/66/otlcustomfix.png text-field.
      Code:
      netsvcs
      /md5start
      ctfmon.exe
      /md5stop
      %systemroot%\system32\*.sys /90
      %systemroot%\system32\*.exe /lockedfiles
      %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles

    • Now click the http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/2405/runscanotl.png button.
    • Two reports will be created:
      • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
      • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
    • Attach both OTL.txt and Extras.txt to your next message. (How to attach)

Thanks for your help, thisisu. I appreciate it.

I have run the scans you specified and will attach the 4 additional scan logs.

This machine came with an all-purpose restore CD, if I remember correctly. I don't think I have a Win XP boot CD for this computer. Is this something I can create on my own? I have another desktop running XP Pro, and a laptop running Windows 7 Home.

Turns out your external is OK according to MBRCheck. Not sure why RootRepeal is complaining.

Let me know how the PC is running after you have completed these steps.

I am running OTL as instructed, but it seems to be hung up on "Killing processes. DO NOT INTERRUPT." (half an hour or so.) should I give it more time or interrupt and start again?
also, are we uninstalling iTunes permanently, or going to repair something and reinstall it later? My wife and daughter both use iTunes quite a bit.

    Thanks again for your help.

Should have finished by now. Go ahead and exit out of the program and try again with the same script as before. Make sure you are disabling your Antivirus programs prior to running.

You can hold off on uninstalling iTunes for now. Let's see how things are running without the Ad-Aware drivers running in memory.

  9. defuller

    defuller Private E-2

I had to run OTL in safe mode after 2 failed attempts in normal mode. Success. Attaching both logs you asked for.

Found and uninstalled Bonjour using add and remove programs from the control panel. Seems to have left itunes intact.

Attaching the scan logs as requested.

The bad news is that it still takes about a full 2 minutes of blank screen to get from the initial "starting Windows" screen to the user logon screen. The good news is that after entering my windows logon password everything seems to load pretty quickly. After that, programs seem to load a lot faster, too, so I can see we are making some good progress.

I need to get to bed now, so will pick up again tomorrow after work.

    Thanks for all your help!

    Dave

Make sure that ComboFix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your desktop -- but do not run it.
If it is not on your desktop, the below will not work.
Shut down your protection software now (antivirus, antispyware...etc) to avoid possible conflicts.
Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into Notepad:
    Code:
    [COLOR="DarkRed"]KillAll::[/COLOR]
    [COLOR="DarkRed"]ClearJavaCache::[/COLOR]
    [COLOR="DarkRed"]FCopy::[/COLOR]
    c:\windows\system32\dllcache\ctfmon.exe | c:\windows\System32\ctfmon.exe

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{0BC6E3FA-78EF-4886-842C-5A1258C4455A}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{AFBCB7E0-F91A-4951-9F31-58FEE57A25C4}]

Save this file as CFScript.txt to your desktop. So now you should have both CFScript.txt and ComboFix.txt on your desktop.
Now use your mouse to drag CFScript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe and then release.
    http://softvisia.com/users/Night_Raven/Security/cfsdnd2.gif
    This will launch ComboFix.
Note: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Allow ComboFix to update itself if prompted.
When ComboFix finishes, a log will be produced at C:\ComboFix.txt
Attach this log to your next message. (How to attach)

    http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/945/baticonxp.gif Now run C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat by double-clicking it.
This updates all of the logs inside MGlogs.zip.

Several times in the last couple of days I have gotten a pop up dialog box asking me what to do with a file download called application/octet-stream. I have attached a screen capture of the latest one. I always cancel, since I do not know what it is or why it is there, but is this malicious? Do I need to do something to block this?

Your latest logs are clean. :)

Regarding octet-stream, it's not harmful but I can see how that pop-up would be annoying.

Question: Does this also happen in Internet Explorer or only FireFox? If so, I'd try disabling all your FireFox plugins and see if the problem goes away. Additional questions should be asked in the Software forum.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis if it present
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work through the below link:
Take care and be safe! :)

Thank you for all your help, thisisu! I appreciate that you have given up your own valuable time to help me clean up my daughter's computer. I have followed the final steps that you outlined, and this computer is now loading in about half the time that it took before.

Take care, and Happy New Year!
