Not sure where to start

What I mean by not know where to start is I don't know if I have a hardware/software problem or if I'm infected. I'm thinking I'm infected because I'm now having this same problem on a second computer. The most recent instance is on an old unit that hasn't been used for several years. This older unit was unbearably slow and had things that I had no interest in saving so I did a system recovery to start fresh. Once the recovery was finished I was prompted to name the computer and enter and verify my password. It then went through a system check and then to my log in screen. Before I was able to start typing my password something (not me)was typing and entering random passwords. These attempts promted the message that the password entered is incorrect with an OK button to try again. "Something" is clicking OK and repeatedly entering passwords over and over. I had to disconnect power to get it to stop. I have read the Read Me First sticky but I am one, unsure if I'm infected and two, not sure how to use the procedures when I seemingly have no control of my computer.
    Thanks in advance for looking.

Complete as much of the Read and Run Me as you possibly can and then attach what logs you end up with.

Kestrel, I've attached my logs and my notes from the process as well.
I booted in safe mode and at step 2 when asked to remove all protection apllications but one it wouldn't allow me. After my system recovery the factory loaded windows deender and an old expired version of Norton were on the system. Defender doesn't show up in my programs and features and when I tried to remove Norton I got a window titled set up requirements check that said "set up has detected windows running in safe mode. Please restart your machine in normal mode. Set up will now exit".
I continued to step 4 and tried to enable viewing of hidden files as in the instuctions. My system didn't follow the steps outlined at the point of choosing "explore". Instead of seeing "Folder and Search Options" I saw a folder called "Programs" that contained folders labeled "Accessories and Maintenance".
After changing the UAC and rebooting it opened in normal mode to my desk top. I then deleted the outdated Noton I couldn't remove before. I moved on to the scans, all went well except "Rootrepeal" which I tried a couple of times. Error message: FOPS-Device Control Error=0xc0000024 Extended Info (ox000000dc).
I've shut down and rebooted a couple of times and so far everything seems normal.

I want you to run TDSSKiller so refer to the below for how to do so.

    TDSSkiller - How to run

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.

Any outstanding issues will have to be further discussed in the software forum. I am not seeing any malware. What I AM seeing is the lack of memory you have installed, or rather severe lack of memory considering this is Vista.

Consider an upgrade to at least 2GB

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required (If we renamed it please rename it back to Combofix.exe.
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Move to your desktop before you follow final steps.

Ok now I'm having more problems, I'm having to send this from my phone. As last instructed I tried to save combofix to my desktop before following the final steps. I had saved the scan tools on a portable thumb drive from my computer at work. I didn't trust getting online with this computer until I knew I wasn't at risk. Unless I'm missing something the only options I had for combofix were to open, run as admin or save as short cut to desk top. I did the latter and ran from the short cut with the portable installed which is the log I posted. I thought I would get online and download from this computer and I would have the option to save to my desk top. When I tried to open IE I get the message "Illegal operation attempt on a registry key marked for deletion". I then tried to open "my control panel" and get the same message. Suggestions?

Reboot. That is a bug in ComboFix. Most likely if you reboot that will go away.

I had shut down prior to my last post so due to the reboot reply I tried to power up. I have absolutely nothing now. I turned power on and the only thing I get is my normal green power on light on the tower, power to my speakers through the usb and the fan running. Nothing else.

It's sounding like a hardware problem now. It would be best to create a thread in the Hardware or Software forum.
