I just got this virus a couple of hours ago. I found out the name from Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool. It said it was only partially removed. I googled the virus and this seemed like the place to come to.

The virus has wiped my desktop clean and there is no ''my computer'' tab in my start menu anymore. And there's no programs under the ''all programs'' in the start menu now either.

My whole music collection was on here so I hope it's just the virus playing tricks on me and everything will come back. Can anyone confirm that?

    Also I'm running windows 7.

Just let me know what I need to do in order for you guys to assist me.

    Thanks in advance

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Whatever you do, DO NOT RUN any disk cleaning programs or else you will delete the info you need to restore what is missing.

Please download and save the below to your Desktop or anywhere else you can find it ( if the Desktop is not showing )

    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe

Now run it. Did that help with your missing items?

You sir are a god among men! Thanks! I still need to get rid of the bad trojan tho but I'm super thrilled to know that my files are still around

EDIT: Looks like all the files are back.. just the my computer, documents etc etc tabs in the start menu are missing. but ALL the other programs that were listed there are finally showing up.

Hopefully getting the virus removed will fix that or maybe I just need to edit the start menu when I'm back in normal boot?

The below is what you need to run to fix the infection.

Goto the below link and follow the instructions for running TDSSKiller from Kaspersky
Now please also download MBRCheck to your desktop.

See the download links under this icon http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Now immeditately continue on to the below.

Your logs show that you have an infected partition that has been made the active boot partition. Do you have your Win 7 boot DVD?

The below partition noted in red is the infection
    Code:
    Partition Disk #0, Partition #0
Partition Size 931.51 GB (1,000,202,043,392 bytes)
    Partition Starting Offset 1,048,576 bytes
    [COLOR=red][B]Partition Disk #0, Partition #1
Partition Size 1.70 MB (1,785,856 bytes)
Partition Starting Offset 1,000,203,091,968 bytes [/B][/COLOR]

As long as you are sure this is a bootable Windows 7 DVD that allows you to get into the Win 7 System Recovery Environment then continue.

    Please download: gparted-live-0.11.0-7.iso (114 MB)
Create a bootable CD for GParted. You can useImgBurn to accomplish this.
If you need help on how to use ImgBurn, please view this guide by dr.m -- Using ImageBurn to Burn an ISO image
Now boot off of the newly created GParted CD.
    http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/6546/gpartedsplash01107.th.png
    You should be here...
    Press ENTER
    http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/7286/gpartedkeymaps.th.png
By default, do not touch keymap is highlighted. Leave this setting alone and just press ENTER.
    http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/9840/gpartedlanguage.th.png
Choose your language and press ENTER. English is default [33]
    http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/7958/gpartedgui.th.png
Once again, at this prompt, press ENTER
You will now be taken to the main GUI screen below
    http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/1122/gpartedo.th.png
According to your logs, the partition that you want to delete is 1.70 MiB (1.70 MB)
Click the trash can icon to delete and then click Apply.
You should now be here confirming your actions:
    http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/1533/gpartedsteps.th.png
    Now you should be here:
    http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/8471/gpartedsuccessclose.th.png
Is boot next to your OS drive? According to your logs, your OS drive is the 931.51 GB sized partition.
    http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/7753/gpartedboot.th.png
If boot is not next to your OS drive under Flags, right-mouse click the OS drive while in Gparted and select Manage Flags
In the menu that pops up, place a checkmark in boot like the picture below:
    http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/3483/gpartedmanageflagsboot.th.png
Now press the Close button to save these changes.
    Now double-click the http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/641/gpartedexit.png button.
You should receive a small pop up like this:
    http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/8986/gpartedexitreboot.png
Choose reboot and then press OK.

Now we will boot from the Windows 7 Recovery Disc
    1. Put the Windows 7 installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
    2. Press a key when you are prompted.
    3. Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then click Next.
    4. Click Repair your computer.
    5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
    6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
    7. In the command prompt window, execute the following commands:
    • bootrec /fixmbr
    • bootrec /fixboot
    • exit
    Once back in Windows...

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Looks like everything is good. The only real problem I was having with that virus was when I clicked a link on google it would redirect me to random sites.
    That problem is now fixed.

The only thing that is bothering me that's not really a big issue but it is highly annoying.. is when I turn on my PC, or reboot it. It starts up just fine.. I can see the options to go to setup,boot.. I can see the logo and it saying starting windows.. but after that my monitor goes black when it goes to the screen where you choose which account you want to log onto windows. This started happening when I first got the virus and is still happening.

NOTE: I can just unplug the blue cable from the monitor and put it back in and the problem is fixed.. and then I will NEVER have that problem again.. until of course, I reboot my PC or shut it down and turn it back on.

Also, it's not letting me attach the combofix log. said I already had it posted. I tried renaming it and still no go.

If I wasn't supposed to post it earlier on, sorry bout that. I'm pretty sure it said to post it.

Sorry about that. I did not need one. I was supposed to edit that line out of my fix. ;)

We have little more to do, but your problem with your diisplay going blank is not likely to be fixed by anything we are doing here. This problem may be a driver or hardware issue of some type. Simply unplugging and replugging back in the cable to fix your problem would have nothing to do with malware.

Let's continue with your fixes and we will be getting a new combofix log this time. :) Also not that you need a real antivirus program but do not install one now. Wait until we finish with cleanup.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 22
    Java(TM) 6 Update 25

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up because you recieve the following error: Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion then you will need to reboot your computer which will normally fix this problem.

Now goto the below link and follow the instructions for running TDSSKiller from Kaspersky
    • Be sure to attach your log from TDSSKiller

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • the TDSSkiller log
    • the MBRcheck log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    You're welcome.

    Just delete the below file:
    C:\ProgramData\u373772a6bowkpgg0kqe582q

Then if you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thanks a ton for all your help. Lastly, how do I hide file extensions/file types? ex: 123.txt how do I hide .txt?

    You're welcome.
When you run the final instructions, this will automatically be reset when MGclean.bat is run.
