Hi, today I have been infected by Smart Fortress 2012 and need some assistance to remove it

The PC is a Dell Studio XPS with an Intel i7 64bit processor, 12Gb memory and 1.5Tb hard drive

I have read many of the threads including 'Smart Protection 2012 impossible to remove??' in which you recommended MGtools but the virus blocks MGtools whether in the root or in the desktop folder

There is no internet access possible as firefox, explorer and safari all bring up a message 'Application cannot be executed. The file name.exe is infected. Please activate your antivirus software. This also happens to any .exe file and even the Start search box is disabled.

I have also tried to run firefox.com from the Chameleon folder but cannot hit the space key fast enough as the DOS dialogue disappears instantly.

This PC is the primary PC for my business and it is hurting me not having access to it.

Is there any assistance/advice you can offer to get rid of this virus?

    Thanks

    johnstag

    Hello johnstag,

    Try the following:

http://img805.imageshack.us/img805/9659/rktigzy.gif Please download RogueKiller to your desktop.

    Rename RogueKiller.exe to winlogon.exe
    Double-click winlogon.exe to run.
When it opens, press the Scan button
When it is finished, there will be a log on your desktop called: RKreport[1].txt
    Now press the Delete button
Attach both RKreport[1].txt and RKreport[2].txt to your next message. (How to attach)

I have run the scan and attached to the files as requested

Good job. These logs reveal a slightly bigger problem than Smart Fortress 2012, nevertheless, manageable.

Here is how I'd like you to continue:

http://img827.imageshack.us/img827/1263/frst.gif For 64-bit (x64) systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64 and save it to a flash drive. Let me know if you do not have a flash drive and I will give you a different procedure to follow. Otherwise, keep following these instructions:

Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.

    Enter System Recovery Options.

To enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:
    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
    • Choose your language settings, and then click Next.
    • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
    • Select your user account and click Next.

To enter System Recovery Options by using Windows installation disc:

    • Insert the installation disc.
    • Restart your computer.
    • If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc. If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or DVD, check your BIOS settings.
    • Click Repair your computer.
    • Choose your language settings, and then click Next.
    • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
    • Select your user account an click Next.
On the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:
    • Select Command Prompt
    • In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.
    • The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
    • Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
    • In the command window type e:\frst.exe (for x64 bit version type e:\frst64) and press Enter
    • Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
    • The tool will start to run.
    • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
    • Press Scan button.
    • It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please attach this log to your next reply. (How to attach)

    Now re-enter System Recovery Options.
Run FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the flashdrive (Fixlog.txt).

    Good job ;)
These will probably be the last steps, but let me know if you still have problems afterwards.

    http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/4930/combofix.gif Fixing items using ComboFix
Make sure that ComboFix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your desktop -- but do not run it.
If it is not on your desktop, the below will not work.
Shut down your protection software now (antivirus, antispyware...etc) to avoid possible conflicts.
Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into Notepad:

Save this file as CFScript.txt to your desktop. So now you should have both CFScript.txt and ComboFix.exe on your desktop.
Now use your mouse to drag CFScript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe and then release.
    http://softvisia.com/users/Night_Raven/Security/cfsdnd2.gif
    This will launch ComboFix.
Note: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Allow ComboFix to update itself if prompted.
When ComboFix finishes, a log will be produced at C:\ComboFix.txt
Attach this log to your next message. (How to attach)

http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/3214/baticonvista7.gif Now run C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat by right-mouse clicking it and then selecting Run as Administrator
This updates all of the logs inside MGlogs.zip.
When it is finished, attach C:\MGlogs.zip to your next message. (How to attach)

According to these latest logs your computer is clean. :)

    __

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Delete the C:\FRST folder if present.
    8. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis if it present
    9. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    10. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work through the below link:
    Be safe :)

I thought I had finished everything but on reboot after disabling system restore I see an application that I do not recognise DownloadHQ - from a quick online search it appears that this is another trojan - how do I get rid of this one?

I have deleted it from control panel - it must have been something loaded to my PC

    You're welcome.

No. These are not intended to replace an Antivirus.

I recommend MSE and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware together.

I will purchase Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and run it together with MSE

Not sure of the cost of Malwarebytes AM but I would like to donate the difference between MAM and $100 - I think I did see a PayPal button somewhere but don't know where - could you send me a link

Thanks again for all of your help it has taken two full days but without it my PC was really screwed and my business was sorely impacted.
