Email Hacked, Other Possible Security Risks Now?

A few days ago one of my email accounts was hacked and multiple blank emails were sent to everyone in my address book. It also appears that someone is now "spoofing" my email address and sending emails with links in them. After changing my password, I ran multiple virus/spyware scans with each one returning different results. One flagged something called "DSO Exploit," another flagged "weatherbug," and most recently, "win32:killapp-w!" came up in another report. I've used AdAware, Spybot Search & Destroy, Avast and Microsoft Security Essentials.

Because my laptop began to run MUCH, MUCH slower (and louder) following the email breach, seemed to make it difficult to open certain programs or tools intended to clean up my system, random programs were displaying various pop up messages, and the Outlook icon in my notifications/system tray kept popping up a message that said another program was using it even though I had closed out of the program and not opened it since the breach, I have been uncomfortable with using it in case there was spyware/malware on it that wasn't being detected, including a possible keystroke tracker.

I found your forum and completed all of the steps detailed in your "Vista & Windows 7 Malware Removal/Cleaning Procedure" thread and have attached the logs from each of the tools except MGtools. My computer would not allow me to install it to the C drive, so I installed and ran it from the desktop. At the end of the scan, I didn't notice anything that indicated where I could find the log and I am not finding anything in a search of my computer.

It would appear that my system is clean, but was hoping someone could help verify that before I try to login to any accounts or enter any personal information online. Also, as per the instructions, if after waiting a couple of days I don't notice any problems, should I go backwards through the steps to undo the other changes made in addition to turning on the UAC, including for example, re-enabling drivers through DeFogger, re-hiding the previously hidden files and folders, and uninstalling the cleaning tools?

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can offer!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!
The instructions given explained that the log is C:\MGlogs.zip

We need to see this log before making any decisions on whether your PC is clean.

If you have both Avast and Microsoft Security Essentials installed, you must uninstall one of them immediately.

I found the MG logs and have attached them. I did uninstall Avast before running through the cleaning steps as was specified.

I want you to run TDSSKiller so refer to the below for how to do so.

    TDSSkiller - How to run

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.

Have you changed your email password from a clean computer? I am not seeing any malware in those logs.

Well that sounds like good news!

Yes, I changed my password via my smartphone as soon as I realized that my account had been hacked.

When I ran TDSSkiller yesterday, it detected several "suspicious object, medium risk" items. Per the instructions, I left the option on each one on "Skip" and continued. The results of the MBRCheck also indicated that problems were found. Should I be worried about any of those?

If everything is A-OK, should I go back through and undo the various steps that I did during the cleaning process, including turning on the UAC, re-enabling drivers through DeFogger, re-hiding the previously hidden files and folders, and uninstalling the cleaning tools?

    Thanks!!

Nothing that was detected was a problem. ;)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
