My PC status suddenly went to At Risk mode (red icon) today. So far the only symptoms are Google redirecting everything to random websites or the live.com login page. Attempts to start a scan on MSE take me to live.com also and the other tabs are disabled. I can't think of anything I could have done that caused this. I had recently downloaded the following applications: utorrent, streamtorrent, revo uninstaller, k-lite codec pack, winamp, ccleaner, winrar.

After running the tests, the redirect problems seems to be fixed, but the MSE error remains.

    Not recommended.

    You have a ZeroAccess infection.

Now download and save a copy of combofix.exe and save it directly onto your Desktop folder.
    • Then double click on it to run it. Do not disturb it by clicking in the window that opens or it may stall.
    • After it finishes, it may reboot your PC. Attach the C:\combofix.txt log that it creates.
If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up because you receive the following error: Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion then you will need to reboot your computer which will normally fix this problem.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista or Win7, make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I have included two logs of redirect scans that I couldn't post last time because of not enough upload slots.

The ComboFix scan stopped to install Microsoft Recovery Console in order to continue. I let it install.

I noticed only through Revo Uninstaller that uTorrent installed something called uTorrentControl_v2 Toolbar. I don't know how that could have been installed when I was careful to deselect all add-ons. I thought uTorrent was legit. Can I do a Revo uninstall of that toolbar and keep uTorrent or is it just not safe? I have already uninstalled StreamTorrent.

After the two scans, MSE no longer shows in the tray.

I should add that Windows Firewall has been inaccessible in the CP since yesterday.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up because you recieve the following error: Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion then you will need to reboot your computer which will normally fix this problem.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I am now able to access the Security Center but it still shows that MSE is turned off and I still get the 0x80070424 error when trying to start a scan.

The Java update you linked to was jre6 and after installing that I got an update notification for version 7 so I ended up installing both.

Sorry for bumping but I want to confirm that this issue is still being looked at. I still can't activate MSE. I also had a very random one-time redirect yesterday but it hasn't happened again.

Try uninstall MSE and then reboot. After reboot, reinstall it and see if there is any change.

Okay then uninstall Java(TM) 6 Update 35 now.

Sorry about the bump. I couldn't tell if the matter had been closed.

I did a thorough uninstall with Revo Uninstaller and successfully reinstalled.

However I am still getting Google search redirects, but not every time like before. In fact, when I went to download MSE I was redirected to Enigma Software Spyhunter.

I got MSE and ran a quick scan that found nothing.

There is still the matter of uTorrentControl_v2 Toolbar still showing as installed in Revo. I think that might be responsible for the redirects. Please tell me what to do about that. I downloaded utorrent on a similar PC at the same time but that one doesn't have it.

In case it helps, I'm uploading two MBRCheck logs, one from yesterday and one from today after reinstalling.

Please run a new scan with RogueKiller and attach the new log.

Do you still get that error when trying to scan with MSE?

One does one MBCheck log show 2 drives and the other 1 drive?

  11. DougHeffernan

    DougHeffernan Private E-2

I no longer get the error. MSE installed fine and ran a quick scan that came clean. Only irregular redirects are an issue now.

The other drive (465 gb) was just an external that was on at the time.

Remember to uninstall Java(TM) 6 Update 35 now.

With which browser? IE or Firefox? Please test both but make sure you only have one open at any time while testing?

  13. DougHeffernan

    DougHeffernan Private E-2

I have not gotten redirects after reinstalling MSE. The last one was after uninstalling MSE as I mentioned last. I just confirmed again on Firefox and IE.

Can you please tell me what to do about the utorrent toolbar? I even saw it on IE8 just now (but not on Firefox). That should not have installed because I made sure to disallow it during utorrent installation.

I uninstalled Java 6.35 when you said.

Not bumping, just updating to let you know that I'm still getting redirects because I can't edit the last post. I got two this morning. When they first started everything would redirect to live.com or some kind of spam site. Now I get redirects to related material. For example, I searched for United flight status and got redirected to a Cheapoair search for United flights. But repeating the search gave me the correct site.

    It is still a bump.
See this:Don't Bump! It Only Hurts You!!!

The cost was another day of delay in getting a reply.

    Which browser is being redirected?

Do you have your Windows XP boot CD?

I see the below in your uninstall programs list

    uTorrentControl_v2 Toolbar

Have you simply tried uninstalling it? Then no matter whether you could uninstall it or not, continue to the below.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select any of the following lines that still exist but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: uTorrentControl_v2 Toolbar - {7473b6bd-4691-4744-a82b-7854eb3d70b6} - C:\Program Files\uTorrentControl_v2\prxtbuTor.dll
    O2 - BHO: uTorrentControl_v2 - {7473b6bd-4691-4744-a82b-7854eb3d70b6} - C:\Program Files\uTorrentControl_v2\prxtbuTor.dll
    O3 - Toolbar: uTorrentControl_v2 Toolbar - {7473b6bd-4691-4744-a82b-7854eb3d70b6} - C:\Program Files\uTorrentControl_v2\prxtbuTor.dll
    O9 - Extra button: Help - {97809617-3937-4F84-B335-9BB05EF1A8D4} - http://online.comcast.net/help/ (file missing)
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
    O23 - Service: Symantec Core LC - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I was waiting for your go-ahead to uninstall the utorrent toolbar. I did a Revo uninstall and then soon after I got another redirect in Firefox so that's weird. I don't use IE enough to know if it's still a problem there because the redirect happen only one or twice per day.

I have just completed your other instructions and uploaded the MGlogs.

If I get another redirect I won't make an update. I'll wait for the test results and next steps.

Empty your Recycle Bin and check to see if the below goes away:

    C:\Recycler\S-1-5-21-4123808793-2160031197-3324002111-1010\desktop.ini

My point about which browser is that you need to check both. You need to shutdown Firefox and test IE to see if it has problems of if it is only Firefox. Experience has shown significant issues due to Firefox and not IE.

That item still exists in the C:\

I used IE for a couple hours and there were no redirects.

Okay then it appears that Firefox itself is the problem and it will have to be uninstall.

We are going to be uninstalling your old version of FireFox and installing the new version. So do the below to save bookmarks:
    • Run FireFox and click Bookmarks.
    • Then select Organize Bootmarks.
    • Then on the next window click File and then select Export. Save the bookmarks.html file to your Desktop for later use in importing.
Now download and save the installer for the current version of FireFox but DO NOT install it yet. Get it here: Mozilla Firefox 15.0.1 Final

You will need exit FireFox now and use Internet Explorer to continue with the below until we reinstall FireFox.

Now uninstall FireFox and then reboot. Do not skip the reboot.

After reboot, delete the below folders:
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    C:\Documents and Settings\Ana Carandang\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla

Now reinstall FireFox from the file previously downloaded.
Import your bookmarks file. (similar process to exporting).

    How is Firefox working now?

It's been a day without redirects now so I'm going to assume it's been fixed by the reinstall.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. You can uninstall RogueKiller and HitManPro.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Press and hold the Windows key http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/Windows_Logo_key.gif and then press the letter R on your keyboard. This opens the Run dialog box.
      • Copy and paste the below into the Run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

  23. DougHeffernan

I've waited a few days to confirm the problem is gone and it is.

System Restore was disabled all along so I couldn't do that step, but I have it turned on now.

Thank you very much for your help, chaslang.

    You're welcome.

Just for future reference! Never disable system restore until AFTER all malware has been removed or a malware removal expert asks you to disable it. Antivirus programs are 100% wrong in having you disable it first. If something goes wrong during malware removal, even an infected restore point my be better than none at all. It could be the difference between just easily fixing a problem or having to do a full reinstall.
