Okay, but just so you know, I have let it load while I slept two times now (so about 7 hours), still was stuck when I woke up.

I have searched for a bootable USB with chkdsk capabilities and could only find this.

It did work and did no damage to my filesystem but it is up to you whether or not you want to try it. I have found no other solutions.

The one thing I hadn't mentioned because your second computer seems to also be a laptop is that if you could add the problem HD to another desktop computer as a secondary drive then you could run chkdsk from there.

I don't know what else to suggest since you can't get to recovery tools.

Do I download the USB or CD version?

And do I do the same thing as I did with the previous ISO file (the whole PowerISO process)?

You would use the USB version. Unzip it to get the .ima file. Then use WinImage to write the .ima file to USB. I used the top link on that site winima85.exe (http) to download winimage.

The recovery disc website shows screencaps for every single step making it look harder than it is. Basically, download the USB version of the recovery disc and unzip it, download and install winimage then follow the steps for running the winimage program. The only problem I had was when I hit the "write" button in winimage I got a floppy drive error. I had to remove my USB and reinsert it and then hit the write button and finish the last dialog box.

When you boot from the USB you would do these steps to run chkdsk (I'd use option 2 first and then try to boot Windows. You can always go back and use the much longer option 3 if option 2 does not work.) The letters of the various partitions you would use in the command will be shown on your desktop. I think Disk Management is also available under Applications if you want a graphical view of your partitions with their corresponding letters.

Okay, I'm on WinImage and I've got the contents of the zip file unzipped and listed out.

Where do I go from here? I didn't see any steps for running the program.

    Yoozil Private E-2

By option 2, you mean Memtest86+?

  7. Yoozil

    Yoozil Private E-2

Okay, I just chose to launch the recovery thing and I ran chkdsk from the desktop and it says that Windows has found no problems.

I want to know if there is more than one partition on that drive to make sure it checked the Windows partition and not just a boot partition.

How many partitions/drives do you see listed on the left side of the desktop. What are their letters and sizes?

  9. Yoozil

    Yoozil Private E-2

I'm a bit confused, what partitions are we talking about here?

I'm on the desktop and all I see is, "My Computer", "Partition Master", "Find and Dismount", Raw Copy", "Recuva", and "Unstop-Copier" on the left side.

  10. Yoozil

    Yoozil Private E-2

Okay, nevermind. I don't think I did it right the first time.

I just chose option 3 to be sure and it's now at 89%.

Do I remove the USB when I try to reboot? Or do I leave it in and just set the priority to my HDD again?

Yeah it said it found no problems again.

  11. gvstn

    gvstn Private E-2

    You can remove it.

I'm sorry I meant there is a transparency on the RIGHT side of the screen listing your partitions. What I want to make sure is if you are checking the C: drive that the C: drive is large 100gb+ rather than just a small 100MB drive.

Edit: You probably have a small 1.5gb partition and then a large 200gb+ partition. It is the large one that has to be checked.
You could also open Partition Master and choose the right side option to open the main window. Then look for your 600gb HD and see the partitions, their sizes and their letters.

Okay, I typed in the letter of my HDD and nothing happened for about a minute before it said,

"Invalid drive, mount point or volume name selected.

    Please try again...
    Press any key to continue..."

  13. gvstn

    gvstn Private E-2

Give me a list of the drive letters and sizes you see on the right, so we are working from the same info. ie.

    B: 512mb
    C: 1000mb
    d: 5000mb

  14. Yoozil

    Yoozil Private E-2

    D: 579.61 gb
    x: 3.77 gb

  15. gvstn

    gvstn Private E-2

    Try Start>CMD
Then type in chkdsk d: /f
Does it run and if so any errors?

  16. Yoozil

    Yoozil Private E-2

    It's running.

  17. Yoozil

    Yoozil Private E-2

    Okay, it's done.

It says that Windows has made corrections to the file system.

  18. gvstn

    gvstn Private E-2

You can try to boot from the HD.
If it doesn't work then I would do the same thing except use

    chkdsk d: /r

Which will be much slower but will try to recover any file fragments from bad sectors. Stage 4 of that will be the longest, probably 1/2 hour.

  19. Yoozil

    Yoozil Private E-2

Didn't work. Guess I'll try that now.

  20. gvstn

    gvstn Private E-2

It can't hurt. So it was hanging at a black screen with cursor after the Windows logo?

  21. Yoozil

    Yoozil Private E-2

It says it cannot open volume for direct access.

  22. Yoozil

    Yoozil Private E-2

    Yeah.

  23. gvstn

    gvstn Private E-2

Try rebooting from the USB and then trying the command again. See if you get the same error. I think that error just means the drive is in use but it shouldn't be.

  24. Yoozil

    Yoozil Private E-2

I thought I was already booting it from the USB.

  25. Yoozil

    Yoozil Private E-2

I don't know what you mean by that, but I just rebooted and still got the same error.

  26. gvstn

D: is still showing 570gb on the right of the desktop, correct?

If you open My Computer can you see files on D:?

Try Start>Control Panel>Computer Management then select Disk Management from the left.

Is Disk 0 showing Basic Disk with one partition 579gb and that partition Healthy?

I just want to make sure I'm not missing something obvious.

  27. Yoozil

    Yoozil Private E-2

Wait, no, it's C: with the 570 GB now.

  28. gvstn

    gvstn Private E-2

There is something strange going on.

Just substitute c: in the command.

    chkdsk c: /r

When you get a chance, look in Disk Management and see how many partitions are on that disk. I'm wondering if one is appearing and disappearing randomly.

  29. Yoozil

    Yoozil Private E-2

    Okay, it's running now.

  30. Yoozil

    Yoozil Private E-2

When it's done, do I remove the USB before I turn the laptop back on again?

  31. gvstn

    gvstn Private E-2

    Yes, just for simplicity.

  32. Yoozil

    Yoozil Private E-2

Should it be working properly after this or is there more stuff to do to fix this?

  33. gvstn

    gvstn Private E-2

A corrupted file is usually the best bet for a hang with a moveable cursor.

If we could have gotten into RE then system restore cold have been an option.

One thing you could do now is try F8 and Last Known Good Configuration again.

The other thing would be your zero during Toshiba boot screen. See if there was any change.

Last take a look in Disk Management from the USB and see if there is a recovery partition on the the HD besides the large 579gb partition. It might be a possibility to boot into that and do a recovery but it may involve formatting the HD and thus erasing all your personal data. I'm not sure stting that partition active would give you the factory restore option but it might be a last resort.

  34. Yoozil

    Yoozil Private E-2

Well, it still doesn't work, and I'm starting to get pissed.

  35. Yoozil

    Yoozil Private E-2

    Woah wait.

I started randomly clicking around the Partition Master and restarted the laptop, and now after 5 seconds the Recovery Wizard shows up instead of just staying on a black screen.

  36. Yoozil

    Yoozil Private E-2

Okay, it successfully restored and I'm posting this from the previously broken laptop.

    Thanks, gvstn.

  37. gvstn

    gvstn Private E-2

Are you saying you don't want to do a factory reset and want to go back to the black screen an go from there? I can take a look at Partition Master, you probably set the recovery partition to active so you want to set the large partition to active instead.

Edit: Ok, good. Sorry, you had to do a restore. I know the black cursor can also be a problem with the welcome screen and winlogin file but I have never seen that resolved.

I would think about burning your set of recovery DVDs at some point. Probably under Start>All Programs>Toshiba something. It can't hurt to have an extra backup, just in case.

  38. Yoozil

    Yoozil Private E-2

    What?

It's already fixed as far as I can tell, I'm posting this from the laptop that was giving me problems.

  39. gvstn

    gvstn Private E-2

We posted at the same time. I edited my post.

I was just saying you might want to burn your recovery DVDs so you have them in the future in case you have a hard drive problem at some other time. :)

    Yoozil Private E-2

    Ah, okay.

    Will do, thanks again.
