    Good evening all,

I recently downloaded a few bits from CNET (www.downloads.com) and in one of the packages was a "do you want to install this smiley face application" I obviously selected no and was brought onto the normal T&Cs. Being from CNET I trusted it, but stupidly processed it without properly reading. This resulted in a program being installed that included what I can only call a browser hack.

It installed "globalsearch.com" as the host search tool. I uninstalled the bits it has installed and also uninstalled Chrome.

I ran Spybot, Malwarebytes, AVG and Glary utilities. Quite a few bits flagged up with Spybot, but nothing with the rest. I sorted, restarted, reran Spybot and now it is fine.

Nonetheless, having installed Chrome again it showed that it automatically visited www.globalsearch.com/favicon.ico (I believe this is just the website icon). This suggests to me it hasn't been complete removed.

Could anyone offer any advice? I hate it when this happens and I am usually extreme careful installing anything, but given it came from CNET I trusted it.

FYI its globasearch not globalsearch, it won't let me edit for some reason.

    Cheers.

    Hello, SLiving84

Only Mods and Administrators can edit their posts after 10 minutes.
Did you use Revo Uninstaller for a thorough uninstall? Did you check for the presence of these folders before re-installing Chrome?

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome
    C:\Users\Joe\AppData\Google

If you wish me to check for malware after doing the above, please follow the below instructions:

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and then attach the requested logs to your next reply when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.
    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes, you could use a flash drive too, but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run RogueKiller, Malwarebytes, HitmanPro and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
    * Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated - our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Here you go - as requested.

The MGTools is rather intrusive... but attached anyway.

I didn't install Revo until after and I also didn't check before reinstalling - sorry about this.

FYI - I use uTorrent for the massive datasets I model in R/Matlab.

FYI 2 - Hitman wouldn't save log (the link was inactive) so I copied the only warning location.

    Cheers.

Edit: How do I make it so that no everyone can download the attachments?

Attached are these. Have the MGlogs too, but uncomfortable posting them where people can publicly access them.

Anyway I can get these to you without them being embedded in the post?

    Cheers.

    :-o

Sorry for the delay in replying, SLiving84

Please follow our instructions more closely - move MGtools.exe from the desktop folder "Applications\Anti V" directly to your desktop.

    Uninstall this:
    Coupon Printer for Windows

Next, copy the bold text below to notepad. (Do not include any space above the word "REGEDIT4")Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" . Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me whether or not you receive a success message about adding the above to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Let's repair your Homepage (start up page) settings
    • In Google Chrome - click the wrench icon and navigate to Settings. Click “Set pages” under the On startup option. Remove any malicious websites and replace with your preferred URL.
    • In Mozilla Firefox - navigate to Tools > Options. Under the General tab remove any malicious URL from the “Home Page:” field and replace with your preferred home page.
    • In Microsoft Internet Explorer - navigate to Tools >Internet Options. Remove any malicious URLs from the Home Page field and replace with your preferred URL.
Now reboot your machine and test your browsers.

NOTE: There are some things in your ComboFix log that I'm asking my collegues about and will post again with further instructions.

    Thanks,
    dr.m
