I want MyDefrag to run its in-built System Daily script. I have followed the instructions given on MyDefrag's site but when I click Finish in the Scheduler I receive the message
"The new task has been created, but may not run because the account
information could not be set. The specific error is:
    0x80070005: Access is denied.
Try using the Task page Browse button to locate the application."

I do not enter a password, leaving the boxes empty. Exisiting Tasks, such as Flash Player update and Google update, function ok, neither of them having passwords.

    What am I doing wrong?

The operating system is XP Home SP3.

Thank you kench, but that article doesn't help.

I am an administrator, it's the only account on the machine, and it's set up so that I don't need to enter a password.

In Windows XP (not sure about Vista/7), you cannot create a scheduled event without creating a user account. You will also have to create a password for the account. Your PC configured as it is has only the default administrator account (which is usually hidden) without a password, so using the Task Scheduler to create an event won't be possible.

Under your setup, this is not true, however, for programs that give you the ability to create a schedule within their settings menu. If a program you have gives you this ability, that schedule will be created and appear in Task Scheduler and will run. Also, you can use the Task Scheduler to change the settings of the event.

I use the same setup as you for convenience sake, and I have added a program called System Scheduler. This is a great program which gives you the ability to keep your current setup with no login or password and then to still be able to create scheduled events. It works with programs or scripts and supports command line commands. System Scheduler (not here at Major Geeks):

FYI, if you install Windows XP from a disk, you will be required to setup a user account to finish the installation. It's difficult from there to be able to arrange the setup such that the hidden administrator is the only account (other than guest), but I have done it before. Many refurbished PCs come with the setup you and I have out of the box, and I am guessing you bought the PC second hand? That's how I got the one I have with the setup...

Seeing as you don't have a password set, try the following:
    • Ignore the error message
    • Go back through the scheduled task wizard and put a checkmark in
'Open advanced properties for this task when I click Finish'
    • On the Task tab in the properties window that opens, put a checkmark in
      'Run only if logged on'

That's not my experience. I have had to reinstall XP Home several times (often through my own fault) I've lost count but it must be well over a dozen. The only user data I have ever entered is in the Administrator box, ignoring the others and just clicking "NEXT".

    That worked, thank you.

Do you know of a Task (presumably a "script") which will shut the computer off? It would be useful to have it do so after My Defrag has finished.

Does the system daily script leave the MyDefrag GUI open?
If so, you could append to the daily script:
    Code:
    WhenFinished(Exit)
    WhenFinished(Shutdown)

    Yes it does.

I copied the script, changed its extension to .txt, and opened it.

I don't understand the syntax so don't know how to append those instructions.

    Do you know?

Thanks for the information. I was trying to accomplish this same thing several years ago and picked up the notion that it is not possible to schedule an event in XP without a username AND password. Don't recall where I read this, but it seems that I saw it a fair number of times and found no solutions. Good to know...

    :)

I installed MyDefrag in an XP VM to test the attached script and it seems to work fine.
Just extract the script and copy it to the same directory as the other scripts. Then modify the Scheduled Task to point to SystemDiskDaily_shutdown.MyD
If you want to inspect the script, just right click and select edit.

That's brilliant, _nullptr, it works fine.
    Many thanks.
