Curious if we have any gym geeks among us here?

My plan is to let my sprained ankle fully heal (90% there already), let my wrist tendinitis get better and less inflamed, and while I wait I will read up on the Stronglifts program and learn proper form for the lifts in the workouts.

And then I will dead lift. :)

Is anyone else here as fascinated and fond of the barbells as I am?

Not a "gym geek" but do gym work more for core and general building of strength and support to injured areas..(.unfortunately my gym closed down so have been lax in finding and picking up a new gym - I digress).

You've noted some other injuries I've also incurred and the one suggestion I really would like you to seriously consider before you attempt anything is to line up a physiotherapist at the gym who will progressively go through the correct equipment and exercises for the areas in question to ensure you don't do any further injury to yourself.

If there is a heated pool at the gym, I'd suggest you do some Hydro-physiotherapy first (again by guidance) to slowly build the strength needed which is gentler than land exercises before moving onto gym work. I found this a great way to prepare my body for gym (land) work, various equipment and weights.

Reading the books is all very well, but I personally do not view it as a safe way of doing things where injuries are concerned. I'd be looking to guided instruction, as I found once I knew which/what were the most appropriate equipment/exercises to apply , I could then follow on without further guidance/supervision.

Here's to a great work out and greater health!

    Cheers

    LS

I've decided to continue slowly building muscle strength in my wrist, so the muscles can do the heavy lifting while the tendon just goes along for the ride, before starting the powerlifting program. I will also investigate using straps to assist the lift, to take pressure off the tendons when the time comes. :)

    Let the gains begin!

I've always rolled with lighter weight and higher reps to build endurance and speed. The strength usually comes along with it.

Good on you Mimsy, you already have a good knowledge on what muscle V's tendon entails.
I love the fact that someone is willing to go through whats required to achieve the results they desire.
It cant be easy being a powerlifter I'm sure......hell, I get puffed playing darts :)

    That gym looks really nice!

I'm actually not worried about injuries. Ankle has healed, the write tendinitis is actually improving as I build the muscles in the wrist, and lifting is going well. I've been lifting weights of some kind or another for years, just never tried barbell-only training before. I'm liking it. Progress is slow but steady. :)

When i go to the Planet fitness.I start by using the bikes i go for about 4 miles than i switch to the treadmill for another 4 miles on a 2.5 or 2.8 speed walk with an incline of 3 trough 6.Don't drink cold water,It does not re-hydrate you drink warmish water. The reason being is because drinking cold water will take longer to heat up in your stomach. If it's warm water it spends less time heating up in your stomach.

Than after the bike and treadmill i lift higher wights as heavy as i can. It's best to lift more wight than do more reps.More wight equals less reps.Than i go back to the treadmill for about another 2 miles.Oh and one other thing.Once your arms start hurting keep going don't stop until you can't push or pull. It's how you build your muscle back up.

Resting is a critical part of recovery, and recovery is when the muscle actually grow bigger and stronger. Always good to see someone take that part seriously and avoid falling into the trap of over-training.

Will we ever see you in competition? I see a lot of links to my home state of Mississippi. Here's a site with links to state's competitions, nutrition and other subjects. Seems to be some strong folks.

When I eat my cereal, should I alternate hands or do one hand one day and the other hand the next day?

To get the full value of the workout you should use the spoon with one hand while holding the bowl with the other hand then alternate every other day.......... if you don't alternate you will only build up your muscles in your right arm and people might think you have been doing something else.....

Does that hold true for the 'doing something else' part?

I think so ..... some guys seem to have one arm that is stronger than the other one from doing too much of something else..... then there are the real wankers that have one massive arm and the other one is still puny lol ;)

Yep I've been alternating which hand holds the bourbon and coke for a while now and it seems to be working ;) I also alternate which hand holds the remote for the TV and I get up to get a refill several times to even out leg work and arm work....it's all about balance ....every little bit helps o_O:cool:

@Eldon my younger brother is a very heavy smoker and he reckons it's the only way to get fresh air....he has tried to stop several times but goes back because, to him, ordinary air smells stale but when he smokes he doesn't notice it lolol.....he probably won't notice he is getting lung cancer either :(

I've lifted off and on since I was a teenager, and there's no better feeling of accomplishment when you reach weight goals. The only thing I can suggest is just make sure you hit all the muscle groups (legs anyone?) during your weekly routines. I've simplified my routine to get a majority of them 3 days a week. I try to do opposite muscles each day, and since I try going heavy, they can rest for a week. I'm by no means a pro, but this has worked for me. Whatever you decide, make it fun otherwise you will keep finding excuses not to do it. I'm 41, so I figure I will go heavy for a few more years, then I can ease it up and go for lighter weights and higher reps.
    Good Luck.

Current program calls for squats both in workout A an B, and B also has deadlifts. Both of which are my favorites, actually... love the sense of accomplishent of lifting heavy on deadlift.

I used to dead lift alot when I was younger . . . now I pretty much just use a bowflex to keep muscle tone. I do have some 40lb dumbells I use off an on when just sitting and watching TV. Over all, the older I have gotten, the less working out I do. It used to be required to a certain extent when I was younger, and without that requirement I've slipped a bit over the years.

Sheer laziness on my part. 20 years ago I'd feel bad if I missed my workout routine even for a day . . . now, I can live with it.
Most certainly let your ankle heal up, and any other issue before you start any power weight work. Combined with some good cardio it is most certainly time well spent.
