(I've never dealt with this issue before and am not particularly knowledgeable on the subject; please forgive me if I'm posting this in the wrong section and feel free to move it.)

Working on the computer earlier today out of the blue I had Avira pop up and inform me of infections. I chose to deny/delete them in said pop-ups and immediately ran a quick scan with MalwareBytes. It detected 17 infections, but before rebooting to finish it informed me that several could not be deleted.

Since then I have been utterly unable to access Windows thanks to the 0X0000007B blue screen.
I cannot boot Windows normally, or use Safe Mode, or restore to the last know good configuration. I've tried all of these multiple times and every attempt is met failure, ie the same blue screen totally blocking my access.

This has never happened to me before so I did some research on the 7b blue screen on my other computer. From what I read about possible causes, I'm feeling this has to do with a virus in the boot sector. That's based on the fact I've not changed any hardware recently (and because infections were detected when Windows last worked.)

Since I can't get into Windows to run my anti-virus programs, how do I deal with this?
While researching I came across the suggestion to put "Avira AntiVir Rescue System" on a blank CD and try that. Would that be appropriate?

    Note:
I had some important documents on the computer that weren't backed up, so I'm really hoping I'll be able to fix this without wiping the computer in the process.

I'd be very thankful for any guidance that could be offered.

If you truly think you have a boot sector virus, you can try using the Avira Rescue Disc or the DrWeb Live CD. They are similar, Linux-based boot CDs. When booted to, they load to a Windows-like environment where you can run virus scans and perform other tasks. They are 100% free to download and use. Here's the download links:
    Avira Rescue Disc http://dlpro.antivir.com/package/rescue_system/common/en/rescue_system-common-en.iso
    DrWeb Live CD ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/livecd/20091209042001/
The downloaded files will be .ISO image files. They must be burned to CD as images and NOT as a normal data disc. If you already have burning software on your PC, look for an option that says something like "create CD from image file" or maybe "write image to disc", then point/browse to the .ISO file. Obviously, you can't burn both .ISO files to one disc, they each must be on their own CD. If you don't have burning software, or if your current software is confusing or doesn't support ISO burning, download and install ImgBurn. It makes burning ISO images very, very simple. Another option besides the 2 rescue discs, would be to boot into the Recovery Console using your Windows install disc and run CHKDSK by typing the command chkdsk c: /r at the prompt and pressing Enter. CHKDSK can fix many boot-up problems in Windows. Also, take a look at this guide to repairing Windows. It also requires you to boot into the Recovery Console using your Windows install disc.
    GOOD LUCK!
    :-D

(NOTE: there is a space before and after the c: in the command above; if you do not use a space before and after the c: the command will not work and will give you an error)
