    Hi

Could you please answer the questions that TeeCee posted earlier as to what is your version of Windows? as it will help with specific steps to help you fix this hopefully.

One thing to check if your using XP or above is in Control Panel > Administrative tools > Services is to locate Windows Defender in the list double click it and make sure that the service is Started and the Startup Type is set to Automatic, then reboot.

Have you installed any new software just before this happened or updated any software before this happened? if so what software.

Can you boot into Safe Mode (F8 at boot and Safe Mode with Networking) and does this message still appear?

If you cannot find it the way Halo suggested try this

Click start>search>file and folder>click all files and folders >then type in windows defender>click search.

If it is in your computer this should find it and tell you where it is by the results address

    Windows defender install

If it won't let you run it
It won't let you look for it,
It won't let you know if you have it,
Then lets try to download it

Use this link above and re install defender. and lets see what happens

This is tell me what to do

You do not need to install the software because windows defender is included Windows Vista. You can access windows defender from your security section of the windows control panel.

Hi - I was searching to try to find help regarding this issue and this is what I found......

    1. Go to www.microsoft.com
    2. In the Search Window (upper right corner), type: windows installer cleanup
    3. Click on the first heading, "Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp
    Utility".
    4. Scroll down and click on "Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility
    package now."
    5. Save it to your Desktop or any folder you wish.
    6. Run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.
    7. A window will pop up. Scroll down to the Windows Defender line.
    8. Select or highlight that line.
    9. Click the Remove button. Then click the Exit button.
    10. Go to www.microsoft.com and download and install the new Windows
    Defender program Version 1.1.1593.0

I hope this helps - if it doesn't, I know someone with more knowledge/experience will jump in :) KathyM

OK, lets all huddle around and come up with a play.

Tee Cee, Kathy M, and Halo if you are still monitoring this thread.

Since this is a program that came bundled with Vista, shouldn't using the Vista Cd and enabling the repair feature solve this problem. there is an error that for a lack of better terms is embedded in defender which is a part of the program installed with Vista. Right now it appears that only Vista is going to be able to repair. Anyone else have have an idea?

We've tried to delete, install, access, look at, move, run, disable.

USA do you have your Vista CD? For right now I'm just asking don't do anything with it yet...

  26. USA

    USA Private E-2

USA do you have your Vista CD? NO...This is a laptop and all the programs are inside the hard drive. What I can do is reboot my completely my whole system up. I have to save a lot of stuff. Before I do this. See what you think. It be like: back to manufactured set up first time run.:)

I don't think we are at the point of wiping your system yet, give us a little more time the best minds (not mine) are working on a solution. Reinstalling in my opinion is the last resort so hang on a little bit longer...

    TeeCee MajorGeek

Hi Buggabear, and USA, I agree, we need some "Vista" minds here.. I am not versed in Vista, I have XP...:confused But, I am available to help in any way I can.

I wouldn't advise a total wipe yet either... Give us some time, USA, and hang in there... Thanks buggabear, for the shout.... I hear ya... :wave

I have a question, did you install anything or uninstall anything before this message appeared?
what were you in the process of doing when you go this message?

  31. TeeCee

    TeeCee MajorGeek

Hi USA, be sure to make a list what you are downloading,
    and keep a list.

Buggabear has a very good question too....Try to think back, to
when did this error start and what were you doing? We just
    might get it yet! ;)

    buggabear.

I thought the same thing that is said. So I went back and check. And to that question no. Came up about three weeks ago I believe. So what I'd get I thought I need to clean it out. So I checked and double checked. I still have the same problem. So what I did I had to restart my computer fresh to manufacturing start up. I got it back together again. So what happened when I started my computer the same note appeared again. Oh boy what did I do some went back and try to figure it out. That is where I am today. Hope that helps.

By the way I noticed when I went to control panel my firewall was off so I've turned it back on today. That's scary. If that helps out.

  34. TeeCee

    TeeCee MajorGeek

OK, Buggabear, Kathy M, and Halo, what do you think? If he did a complete system restore back to factory settings, why would the error still be coming up? :confused Yes, I am stumped, but I am sure you all have much more experience in this than me.. :-o

Hey, USA, maybe it was the firewall being off that was giving you the error? If firewall is off, it sure cannot protect your computer, and therefore, your computer will allert you that an application cannot run... What do you all think here?

USA, now that the firewall is on, are you still getting the error?

How did he do a factory restore without the disk, unless he used the recovery partition on his computer. If he used the recovery partition on his computer then the problem will still be there, he is only putting back the same problems he took off.

Hi Buggabear, what about the firewall being off? Could that have anything to do with it?

OK, I understand what you are saying, but sounded to me like he did a system restore from the control panel? Just guessing, at this point... :confused

OK, USA, go to the link Buggabear gave ya, and let us know how you do....

Not sure if that would or not but now it has me thinking. The firewall for windows doesn't go off by itself you turn it off or one of the security suites turns it off once their software is enabled...
Could a internet security suite be interfering with that app?

  39. TeeCee

    TeeCee MajorGeek

That is what clicked with me too..... I know on my XP I have control over it.. But, Vista is so different..... I wonder too, if that firewall has been off for the whole 3 weeks? Or, did he turn it off without knowing it? And the story shall continue...... Let's see how he makes out with the new link you provided, and take it from there, OK?

MS Vista check you disk for errors. OK I went there and do the A diagnostic on my computer to go a long time. So is restarted my computer startup and I still have 0X800106ba on my computer. I tried I will keep going I don't give up easily.

When you did the diagnosis did you pick the option to automatically fix the errors it found.
I'm not sure how long it runs but let it tun it's course and if it finds any errors let it fix them. After it finishes reboot and see if the error comes back
