Morning - I was doing some research and found that Windows defender requires Client for Microsoft Networks to be installed but not enabled. Did you uninstall this program by chance?

Good Morning Kathy, I came across the same fix and read through it. Unfortunately since he doesn't have the Vista disk I don't think he can put it back. There are so many different options floating around the net, a lot of them not verified, it's going to take him a while to get to them all.
I asked for assistance from another MG "Dlb" and he was able to give me the following links that may help "USA". They however require patience and his time to get through them.

    "USA",
first you are going to need to back up all your important documents to either a disk or a external hard drive, along with your important settings. Any programs that came after you installed Vista you may need to locate the disk for just in case somewhere along the line reinstalling Vista becomes necessary. Click on each one of the links provided 1 thru 4, they take you directly to Microsoft Knowledge base, and provide insite and solutions to Windows Defender errors.

1.Unable to enable Windows Defender application in Windows Vista

    2.Troubleshooting Windows Defender

3.Windows Defender encountered an error: 0x800106b5 This one is similar so read through it anyway

4.Application failed to initializeThis one looks to be the best option however at the very end it may require you to reinstall Vista from your recovery console

If you have questions or are not sure about any of the listed links please post and ask before you make any changes. Someone on MG should be able to assist you them to you...

I am on page 53 on Kathy M the four steps One step to do not go through the second step same thing. I went to my control panel to find windows defender and I wasn't there to take out or repair. Step three but I know that I need to do is one and two step. Somehow I can't get through that.

Form post number six from Halo

One thing to check if your using XP or above is in Control Panel > Administrative tools > Services is to locate Windows Defender in the list double click it and make sure that the service is Started and the Startup Type is set to Automatic, then reboot.

OK I went to control panel administration tools look for windows defender do not see it at all. Remember I have vista.

Looked like I tried everything that you showed me. Should I restart to manufacturing like brand new computer. I did download everything I needed to do that let me know if we should go in that direction. We'll play by ear.

MS Windows Security portal 32 bit windows defender update

USA I haven't given up yet, here is a direct link to a windows defender update. If you click on the link it will take you right to the download. Try this and see if it works for you. I'm still looking for a few more.

If it doesn't run from the direct link, save it, close all windows/programs open, and run as admin, then run the program

Hello everyone, so sorry I wasn't here earlier, but with the nice weather, so comes the chores...:tired...... OK, so USA is still having problems...

I wonder, "DomLuc", now, just wondering, if when he did the system restore(?) would he be having any conflicts with his antivirus, IF his antivirus also had a firewall? I ask this, because my Trend Micro has a firewall, but I have that shut off, and use the Windows Firewall..

I am not as knowledgeable as the rest of you :-o....So, I am just trying to help by what I do know... If both were on, that may have caused a conflict with Windows Defender, maybe? Just a thought at this point, as nothing else seems to be working... Must put brain back to work!!! :confused

I am sure USA will keep us posted... Hang in there, USA, I am sure we will come up with something.........:wave

To your question DomLuc yes I understand I've putted in about 3 to 4 weeks ago. Maybe that's what's causing it. Now I know what SP1 got it. Get back to me. Thank you:)

TeeCee back to your question about the firewall probably may be the same time. Question marks. I wondering if I stalled the SP1 if that caused it. If that windows defender stopped working.??:cry

Good Morning "DomLuc", I will be off-line most of today, but thought I'd check in here first.

If USA uses either of the links you provided, would that 'remove' his security? Isn't there a way to just turn off the firewall in his security without removing it? :confused I think he has McAfee, but I doubt he would want to remove it, just shut off the firewall in it... Doesn't it have a user control panel? Hmmmm... :confused

OK, I'll check back when I get back from Dr. appts. today... :wave

    TeeCee MajorGeek

Hi "DomLuc", maybe we should ask USA what security he is using, and take it from there.... Thanks for your reply, I almost missed it!! ;)

OK, I hope USA checks in today, and maybe he can clarify things, and then we will know which direction to go in. OK, catch up with ya later, :wave
