0XBE Error after reboot Windows XP

When I attempt to boot windows in any mode I get a 0XBE error (attempted write to read-only memory), and it does not include a specific file name that is creating the problem. This happens before the logon screen can even load. This is the first time this problem has happened since I installed XP years ago.

This error occurred after I restarted from attempting to remove a trojan/virus that had infected my laptop. I used both MBAM and ESET to scan for, and subsequently remove files that both had found. As I am very familiar with all the processes running on my system I noticed that there were 4 BHO's that were obviously connected to the trojan. Against my better judgement I used Hijackthis to "Fix" them (thereby deleting them). This is the only reason I can see for getting this error, (possibly corrupting something in the registry?). No new hardware or drivers have recently been installed. Any help is appreciated!

Update: Tried bootcfg /rebuild and a repair install from the XP recovery CD...No effect.

Are you sure it's the letter "B" (as in "bee") and not the number "8" (as in "eight")??? The first few 'hits' at the Microsoft Knowledge Base for "BE" come with results for "8E" (eight E), and one of 'em relates to a virus infection (info: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903251). However, if it truly is a "BE" (the letter "b" and an "e") then chances are it is faulty RAM or possibly a hard drive error, and it's just coincidence that it happened right after a virus infection. Run a full hard drive diagnostic (available free from your hard drive maker's web site; they'll have a bootable utility) and run a full memory diagnostic (I like this one; it's free, and you can boot to a CD created from the download; press "T" after the test starts for the extended tests).

GOOD LUCK! Let us know what happens!

(BTW - use this link to see a list of results that I got using "BE" as an error code when I searched Microsoft's Knowledge Base).

:-o After re-checking the list of results from Microsoft, I see that the first few actually are related to "BE" (bee E), but most of the hits after the 4th or 5th mention "8E" (eight E).... sorry . . . my bad . . .

No worries...hahah. Did a thorough diagnostic of both, and each passed. Any other ideas?

You can try booting to the Recovery Console, and use chkdsk c: /r to scan and repair any file system problems. It can take a loooong time for chkdsk to complete, so maybe start it before going to bed. It may appear to lock up, it hasn't.... you may see the progress percentage counter actually go backward, don't worry.... just leave it alone. DO NOT restart or power off the PC in the middle of running chkdsk. I have seen chkdsk take over 8 hours, so be patient and let it complete. When it's done, type exit and press Enter to restart the PC, remove the XP CD, and hopefully it will boot to Windows *fingers crossed*. In the meantime, I'll try to do some deeper research for you and I'll post anything I might find, and hopefully someone else will jump in with some suggestions too. ;)

NOTE: there is a space before and after the c: in the command above; if you don't use the spaces, the command will error out and do nothing.

Did chkdsk /r twice...error still appears.
