$1.52 billion in damages

    This will surly put a dent even in Microsofts wallet.

    NEW YORK - A U.S. federal jury found that Microsoft Corp. infringed audio patents held by Alcatel-Lucent and should pay $1.52 billion in damages, Microsoft said Thursday., Microsoft said Thursday.

    IP and Litigation go hand in hand these days, most companies have some sort of court case going on on who owns what IP rights, I notice Apple and Cisco came to an agreement.

    Also even with a fine of that size their shares still went up 4c, shows stock market are not bothered.

    But could this ruling be actually bad for the end users of MP3??? because now A&L will go after other OSes and software developers that use this MP3 codec.




    What folk should be more worried about is that Alcatel-Lucent may pull out of USA and stick to factories in France where the main company Alcatel is based, taking their 1.52B$ with them, leaving the poor US workers out of a job ( they have or a re going to cull 9000 US workers ) , because I'm sure that they wont invest that payday in the USA.
