10 Questions for the Creator of CSS, Opera Software's Haakon Wium Lie

Haakon Wium Lie is not only CTO of Opera, the Norway-based browser developer, but also one of the Web's early driving
forces. Lie worked with Tim Berners-Lee and submitted what became the CSS (cascading style sheets) Web page formatting
standard. PCMag met with Lie in our New York office this week to discuss a new initiative that could change the way people
experience Web pages—CSS Generated Content for Paged Media. It's a new standard being proposed by Lie to the World Wide Web
Consortium, and what it brings is a scroll-bar-free browsing experience not unlike what you get with the popular iPad
reader app, Flipboard.] Except it will just work with a browser—no need to download and install an app. For now, though, the
standard is only supported by the Opera Reader feature in experimental versions of Opera.

It seems they're (Google) more eager to put out things and see what sticks. Now that they have their own browser, they
think less of making sure it works across the board. It's a concern because Google wouldn't have existed if it hadn't been
for the open-standard Web. Then we all would have probably lived in Microsoft-land.
