I learned that if I'm being ignored I may have posted something in the wrong forum. So I am trying to repost it here. PLEASE don't yell at me!

I have a "Dell Demension 4600" (I know thats my first problem) with 512rm. 2.66GHZ. I've had to reinstall the OS. ( I got it from a friend the screwed it up. there was no system restore or drivers) He wanted his wifes contacts from outlook and then I could have to computer. I was the second person to get it. the first said he couldn't do it so he tried to reinstall windows. so I told him his wifes info was " toast". So now I nedd to install windows. I went to a Dell chat and they told me to remove 1 of the memory sticks and the dial-up modem and install windows. I would then be able to instal drivers after that. It took forever (6hrs) to install windows. I reinstalled the memory and modem and was trying to install drivers but.... the computer runs .1 miles and hour. and I mean slow! I swapped out memory with a different computer and also swapped harddrive<---2--->motherboard cables. The Hard Drive is a Western Digital 40gb. Prior to installing windows I wrote Zeros to it and installed windows on another computer and it was fine so I know it isn't the drive. Can You Help?

Also... I went to task manager and it always says CPU is 100%. different apps sucking up the memory at different times, its kinda wild in there. Usually the task manager sucking up 50-75% which seemed awfully odd. ok ball in your court! I am sending a screen shot.

    After reading another post
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=94686
I thought of something. I did get an error while installing windows (all 4 times i tried) it simply said INF could not be installed perimiter not found. As close as I remember. also there is nothing connected to the computer but the monitor, (no printer ect.). I am now running "SFC /scannow" maybe it will come up. Also when installing windows there was a 977mb partition that I couldn't delete. tried 3 times also tried to delete the other end of the partition (Lg size of drive) thinking it would come together it did not.

I was looking to see if the other post was resolved it didn't look like it was. My problem is the same except my computer does boot up. It will not take any MS updates. I originally said 6 hours or so to install windows it may have been much longer I waited 4 hours and then went to bed. I got the error in the morning and had to click enter b4 it resumed. Sorry this post so long rambling now,.....................

HOW DARE YOU? HOW DARE YOU POST ASKING FOR HELP!?! I AM GOING TO YELL AT YOU SOME MORE!!!!

Of course I'm just joking :-D

I've never heard of this "INF could not be installed perimiter not found" and when I googled it I didn't find anything. Are you sure that is the exact wording of the error? Also, in what part of the installation process did you see this error?
As to the undeletable partition, there is always a small portion of the hard drive that cannot be assigned to a partition during Windows setup. This is normal.

There are a couple things I need to know. First off is a detailed list of the hardware inside of the machine other than http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/de...tium/4507-3118_7-30529709.html?tag=mncol;rnav. I am particularly interested in how much RAM you have in it.

Secondly, look at the processes list in task manager, sort by CPU and note if any processes show an abnormal amount of CPU time other than "System Idle Process".

Thirdly, look inside of your computer at the motherboard and see if any capacitors (the cylinder like components) are not perfectly flat on top. If any capacitors

    bad: http://members.datafast.net.au/dft0802/puscap.jpg

A windows installation should not take 6 hours. It sounds like to me that there may be a hardware problem.

Well I just wrote a book and I wasn't logged in and everything got erased! urggggg! ok starting over...............

    First to answer your questions...
#1 I have 2 memory sticks of 256mg each. I was on a "Dell Chat" and they told me to remove both and only put back 1. also to remove the dial up modem. Since I didn't have the drivers disk I could download the drivers after.

#2 I looked at the board and none of the capasitors have been bent over and the tops are all fine.

#3 the only hardware installed that didn't come witht the computer is a D-LINK Wireless card which I have disabled. The machine does note "new hardware found PCI input device" I click ok and mustr be I don't have drivers for it. Also I do not know what it is.

#4 I got the "INF could not be installed perimiter not found" with 7 min to go on the reinstall of xp. I just clicked ok and it continued.

#5 Task Mgr say 100% CPU and the task Mgr sucking up almost all of it!. see Pic from
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=176180 POST

#6 even thought this wasn't one of your questions.....
I googled this problem and found several people with this problem on different forums. I tried to e-mail them to no avail. I couldn't find and solutions

    and

    OK your turn......
this time I'm coping this message!

Also as far as the partition there was a 8mb partition and normally i would delete it by hitting "D" then "Enter" Then "L". then normally I would create a new partition. the partition that it wouldn't let me delete was 977mb. I tried 3 times. if I go to my "C Drive" i do not see the partition even with hidden files turned on so maybe It did delete it .
    OK thats it

My computer has a "Intel 865G" (according to the dell link you gave me) looked for a patch couldn't find one. I am re-downloading the chipset. v5.00.1012 per DELL. I am also going to remove some hardware 1 by 1 to see what happens starting with D-LINK.
    anyother ideas?

Have you ran Windows Update yet?

I have tried to run update several times it keeps sending me to a window that says Microsoft has encountered error. Or somewhat to that effect. I will try again. I DO have a xp disk that has service pack 3 on it.(that doesn't go with this computer) is there a way to get the update from there?
I removed the Dial Up Modem and the D-Link Card to no avail. I cannot remove my video card because my monitor is on it.
I have learned with other devices that sometimes

I am going to try an update again

And lucky me I can only buy a dell processor. and they're only $599-$699. Like I said my first problem was haveing a Dell. well anyhow
Thank You Very Much For Your Time and Keep Up The Good Work!

I swapped hard drives and memory with no results. I was told that you could only use dell parts in a dell. Thats why you don'y buy one in the beggining. Can I get a processor from like newegg or tigar direct that will work. I didn't think so but you tell me.
    Thanks for the info

IMO Sony computer are far superior to Dell and Dell has horrible customer support, but that is just my experiences. It doesn't help matters that a lot of Dell computers have non-standard parts that are expensive to replace and calling Dell support often gets you someone in India.

Back to the matter in hand. I have never heard of a Dell processor. Your processor should either have been made by Intel or AMD. To find out what kind of processor:
    1) Look up your model number on google and find out what your computer came with and what it can handle.
    2) Take your processor out of your computer, wipe of the thermal compound and look at the etchings on top of the processor. Usually says something like AMD3000 or something. This is a delicate procedure, make sure not to bend any pins and your computer is not plugged in.

You should be able to get your processor much cheaper at newegg or tigerdirect.

What type of CPU does your Dell take? Socket type? May have one for you.

While searching for specs on a Dimension 4600, I came across a PCWorld article titled The 10 Worst Computers. Yours ranks at #10 (meaning there are 9 that are poorer than yours).
Has the power supply ever been replaced?

Also, it seems ridiculous to me that tech support would tell you to remove RAM while installing windows. I know it is a good idea to test the RAM sticks by removing one than the other but not during an installation when you need all the RAM possible.

I'd say, if you want to put any money into to this computer, get 1 GB of RAM and a new power supply (but only if it can be purchased from anywhere but Dell; if you have to buy a special power supply from Dell, then it isn't worth the $$$$).

B4 I starting "Buying" parts I have a "presario" and a "Vaio" that work fine I will swap power supplys. I already did the Ram and Tried different drives. I have 12 drives 3.25TB. I cant swap processors but I will do the power supplys. I will let you know how it comes out.
Just for the hell of it I also have 3 "Motion computing M1400's" I'm not a complete nubie here. There are so many different levels of computer knowledge. I do know more than the average but sometimes I need a little help.
    Thanks Guys (and Gals)

I swapped power supplys and after 3hrs trying to install windows it still said 39 minutes to go.(which was one of the orig. problems) I pulled the processor and looked online I wasn't sure which one would match. I have a 2.66ghz/512/533 not sure what the 512 stands I think the 533 is the socket. Does the one you have work for me even though it is a 2.8 and the socket is different?

  18. carmello2003

    carmello2003 Private First Class

Ok I see the 512 is the cache and the 533 is the FSB 478 is the socket. so the only question is that will a 2.8 work?

I see that 512 is the Cache and 533 is the FSB 478 is the socket. My board should not have a problem with a 2.8GHZ (i assume)

The processor should be a direct plug-in for yours. It will be a very small performance boost(2.66-2.8) and may have a bigger L1-L2 cache which would help. Contact me at yahoo.com so I can get your mailing address(and shipping will be on me. MERRY CHRISTMAS).:wave
