100% CPU Usage in safe mode. Ran through the malware steps for removal. Didn't come up with any.
Running XP AMD processor 3.5 gig ram
I did a search but nothing to help me
any help would be much appreciated

Would be nice what is 100% cpu usage. Can you bring up the task manager? Either right click the start toolbar and click taskmanager. Or, my preference, click START, then RUN, then type in: taskmgr.exe. Yet another way, hit CTRL + ALT + DEL select task manager.

Now click the processes tab, then click cpu till the highest cpu usage is at top. What is taking the most cpu? If it is System Idle Process, then you can ignore that. Cause it essentially states what cpu usage is available for other tasks.

explorer but i can only start up in safe mode (21 processes) If I hit the reset button and try to start up normal I can sometimes get it to start the proper way. Once I can get it to start in normal mode I have 56 processes and still %100 CPU usage.

Ran Malwarbytes last night before bed, woke up this morning it showed found a root kit but I could not do anything the computer was froze up. Shutdown using the reset button. Got home today the computer started right up in normal mode with %17 CPU usage.
So now my question is malwarebytes doesn't show a log for last night so I'm not sure what was infected and what I should do now.

could run malwarebytes from Safe Mode, any extra processes will not be running

    btw,

in your photo you can sort any column like any other excel file by clicking on the column heading, this would show the CPU percentage being called for... food for thought as the photo does not show what process(es) being called to use your CPU and other resources.

If the original poster is still around, there may be a way to narrow this down. And, yes, using msconfig. But, only for testing purposes.

Click START, then RUN, then type in msconfig (press enter).

click selective startup, uncheck "load startup items". Press, ok, ok to reboot. Now, boot into normal mode.

yup still here. I will go thought the Glary Utilities. But first it think I'm going to need to post in the malware forum I did rerun malware anitbytes and was able to save the log. It did find a root kit but I dont believe it was able to kill it (remove it). I tried to start up today and could only in safe mode. I will try to nip this root-kit first then see if the computer is still running %100. I'll post back soon
    thanks so far!!!

Then I'd go to the malware forums 1st before you come back there. Once we know you are clean, we can go from there. ;)

OK I'm back all clean but still running at %100. I know I got a bunch stuff I really dont need running on here just forgot how to stop it all from loading.
Got the computer to start in normal mode today an a update just cam thought so I'm going to restart now so If I'm not back for a bit you'll know why can prolly only start in safe-mode again:(

Alright, bring up the task manager, and show under performance and processes your 100% task usage.

You've been given a clean bill of health from malware.

    Try downloading Winpatrol;
    http://majorgeeks.com/WinPatrol_d3380.html

Then, under the startups, do NOT check the box for "show secret locations". With most systems, I find 20 to 40 processes showing, way more than you need, in fact, your computer will run without any of these.

You should see, maybe, your anti-vir, winpatrol, and at most a couple of other programs. Start disabling the others, certainly anything with google, yahoo, aol, adobe, helper, updaters, in it. Somewhere you are likely to see a significant difference/improvement in performance. I've attached a link to my winpatrol picture.

Or, you may be experiencing a driver conflict/error. Any errors in your device manager? Right My Computer, go to, I believe hardware or device manager, (I'm on W7, different than XP), any yellow flags or ! points?

Download Process Explorer from the software bank here at MG, and it will show all processes running. The one that is eating up CPU time, is the one you want to click on. From there it will show the sub-processes in a window that way, you can pin-point it. We have a problem with wbemcore.dll, under svchost, which only until we started using Process Explorer to kill that sub-process, it made to be a head scratcher.

I'm watching this thread with interest because I have an old HP notebook (win 2K) that does the same thing. The only way I can gain control over the notebook, once it does the 100% CPU usage thing, is to restore it to an image from an earlier time.
I know the process that creates the problem (services.exe). I've gone through the windows services using BlackViper's safe column and there are so few running. The computer has not been connected to my network nor the internet in over a year so I know it is not malware.
I assume it isn't hardware because then restoring an image would not suddenly make it work fine again.

I hope you find a solution; it might lead me to a solution because I've been struggling to figure this out since May 2009. Thank goodness I have lots of images for it so I can restore and get it working fine for a few months until it decides to do its own thing.

Use Process Explorer as I suggested to look at the sub-processes in the process that is eating up CPU time.

At least for me, when the CPU is at 100%, I can not run process explorer, which sits on my desktop because the desktop icons never load. I've let the computer churn for more than 12 hours with the lid closed so the screen is not on, hoping that eventually the desktop would load. It doesn't happen.
