    Hi,

My z510 Lenovo laptop has been running very slow and hanging in the past few days. If I go to task manager, disk usage is constantly 100% and in red, even when I am not running any programs and the MB/s for all processes is small. Only occasionally it goes down to normal levels, but most of the time it is 100% regardless of what is the combined data transfer.

For a long time I've had problems with the touchpad -occasionally it would freeze completely, or the pointer would work but the touchpad would stop being responsive to the two fingers to scroll down, but if I tried using a mouse or the keybord when this is happening they worked fine. Those same problems have now become much more frequent.

Today I ran a full harware scan with "Lenovo's solution center" and I got a warning for "SMART short self-test" and "SMART drive self-test". It only says warning and a result code (WHD01V000-DJ7C5K), but I can't find anything on it. All other tests were passed.

Any thoughts on what to do about it?

The laptop is about 6 months old and was bought brand new. It's still on guarantee. Here's some info from Belarc:

    LENOVO 20287 Lenovo IdeaPad Z510

    Slot 'DIMM0' has 4096 MB
    Slot 'DIMM1' is Empty
    Slot 'DIMM2' has 4096 MB
    Slot 'DIMM3' is Empty

    Thanks!

If you are getting a SMART test warning or failure, it means the hard drive is in the process of failing.

First, back up your data NOW if you have not already done so. The hard drive could fail to the point of not being able to recover data at any moment.

Once you've done this, call Lenovo. They'll likely give you three options:

    • Mailing you a new hard drive and factory restore DVD if you want to do-it-yourself.
    • Mailing the PC back for service.
    • Taking it to a local authorized service center (if available) to do the work.

    Hope this helps :)
