My CD-ROM drive D does not read any kind of CD. I have a dell dimension 2400 with Windows XP, Pentium 4 processor, the drive is showing up in Device Manager as CD-ROM and I can't remember the make and model of the drive. Anytime I put in a CD and try to open D drive it says please insert disk. The device shows up as working just fine in device manager, and I reinstalled the driver, it also starts up when I close with a disk in, but it stops very shortly after. I tried using a cleaner but it couldn't even read the cd. I also have not installed any new burning software, only Windows Media Player and the built-in burner, is it dead?

    Probably.

CD-ROM drives are dirt cheap now -- they've essentially been pushed off the bottom of the market by inexpensive CD writers and DVD drives. So there's not a lot of point in investing expensive time investigating what went wrong with it. Just replace it.

Yeah...I tend to agree with Rob here.
