Heads up from my previous posts.

Cairns teenager Alex Johnston landed a 1091 lb Black Marlin on 130lb line on Sunday, 26th November 2006, on Dad's boat "Shikari".

Biggest (heaviest) fish of any kind, caught by someone under 17.
5 metres long (around 16-17 feet).

He broke his own previous world record of a 485.5kg tiger shark ( around 1068 pounds)

    Took 75 minutes to land.

It is his 97th Marlin, his dad said.

What happens to the fish after all the hooplah? Do they have a big BarB and eat it?

Quote from the kid on morning show "we took a few casts then returned it to the food chain":) Clever way of saying we took what we wanted then threw it back to the fishies to eat:) Have to agree with Rikky, most people catch and release these days

Thanks for the pix, Rikky. :)
Our local Cairns Post website didn't show it and I couldn't find anything on google at the time. :p

As others have said, most fish caught are tag and release.
I assume as this was going to be a world record, it was landed, unfortunately for the fish. Bazza

Useless local newspaper. Article and picture made the front page of the next day's front page of the Cairns Post, but not at their website.:p

He's copping a lot of flak for landing (and weighing in) this one.
They towed the dead fish out to sea and used it to feed sharks afterwards.

Dad should have known better (that the greenies would be up in arms).
Don't know how they prove a world record nowadays, without landing and weighing it?

Ya know, that's a real shame though I'm sure the sharks etc. enjoyed the marlin's premature death, along with teaching a 14 year old bad conservation practices and that such a magnificent creature can be considered as a throw away trophy. One can't do a catch and release, now can they.

I'm not a "greenie" per se, though I do believe that we , as humans and the top predator, are sucking the life out of our planet faster than our earth can replenish the resources. I could go on and on but I think it's better this way, in short doses. ;)

BTW, who cares about a world record. The kid should lift wheights or such.

Agreed, and they do have ways of weighing these big catches without killing them. They have marlin fishing comps all the time and i'm pretty sure every fish they catch doesn't end up as shark bait. This fish died so the kid could make a cast of it to stick up on his wall.
