OK, I let you guys help me decide to upgrade to XP and to do a clean install for it. I've backed up all my stuff and formatted C so that it is ready.

I put the CD in the drive and nothing happened. I started the computer with a 98 boot disk and tried to run setup from there. No dice. It tells me that 'setup cannot be run from DOS'. So I took the boot disk out, left the CD in the drive and rebooted. It wants a boot disk in the floppy.

I tried booting with and without CD support. Without CD support, it doesn't even see the CD drive so that doesn't work at all. With CD support (leaving the XP CD in the drive) I don't get any further.

Should I start it with the 98 CD in the drive and then switch? Will that make any difference? I also tried running Autorun but that didn't work either.

Sure hope someone who can as\nswer this i\ASP is around. I need to get past this first step. Might have to go to the feed store in the meantime but that would mean putting clothes on over my sunburn and work last night was enough of that for a while.

I have the disc in the burner. Should I try it in the other drive? Right now I am sitting here twiddling my thumbs with no OS on my computer.

hmmm...even setting my cd to first boot device, I couldn't get it to boot to the xp cd. I had to download the xp boot file.

dumbest thing I think I have ever seen. snort! I followed that link. It tells you '

Please specify the floppy drive to copy the images to: To create these disks, you need to provide 6 blank, formatted, high-density disks.

Please specify the floppy drive to copy the images to:

Type the drive letter for the floppy disk drive (this istypically drive A).

The file is 4301 kb. Netscape smart download doesn't seem to know how to handle using 6 discs for the file. Guess I will download it to E and then proceed somehow from there.

This is not supposed to be this difficult.

Apparently my disc is not bootable. It keeps 'searching for a boot record on CD-ROM' then I get the invalid system disc message.

I just called MS. They will only help me for $35 per hour. I don't think so. I am not Bill Gates and money don't grow on trees. She said my only other options are online help or call newegg.com. So I will continue to download the bootdisk onto bratboy's hard drive.

My next problem from there will be how the heck do I get it onto the floppies?

    Yippee!! Wahoo!!! Hooray!!!!

It's working now. I ended up downloading the boot disk file to bratboy's harddrive then installing it to 6 floppies. Now it is setting up XP on my computer. Once I get this part done, comes the tedious part of reinstalling all of my software. I really wasn't looking forward to that part but it has to done.

At least I have it working. Going to the feed store helped clear my mind and the french fries from Burger King weren't bad either. :D

now to bet back to work....

Guess this is a little too late but you could have used the Win98 floppy to install the WinXP. You just had to run i386\WINNT.EXE instead of \SETUP.EXE

He's doing fine. I can't call him that much longer tho. ;) He turns into a real teenager in just a couple of weeks. I will have to give him a new name. hehehe He still insists that he doesn't want XP as his main OS but might consider a dual boot system. He says that King of the Road just doesn't play well with XP but it might be ok for surfin. snicker... you can only activate it on one computer so I am not loading it onto his.

I am in the process now of installing programs. I have discovered that I don't need to install the software that came with my HP camera. XP already knows about it. But I did need the disc for my HP printer. go figure.....

Does anyone know if I can import my favorite bookmarks that were saved with 98? I did copy them onto another drive along with my cookies folder. I can see that I have a lot of exploring to do with this program.

Darn! sure wish you had been on earlier this morning. that would sure have been easier. But I will save this info and try it when my sister gets her copy of this OS. I will also save those 6 floppy discs.

Well this how you install WinNT and Win2k from DOS, so I guess the same applies for WinXP.

We'll certainly find out soon enough. I saved that tip and copied it into a text doc I keep called computer tips. Whenever my sister finally gets her copy, I will try it.

Thanks, I wrote that down and will attempt to move my bookmarks, cookies, and old emails later this morning.

Do you have any idea how to save a picture embedded in an email? My niece sent one of her daughter. Right clicking on the pic did not give me that option. Might be able to go to Yahoo and pull it off the list.......I don't want to lose that pic just to get my old emails but she could always resend it as an attachment if necessary, I spose.

hehehe so much to figure out before my sis gets her copy...
