16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem. What does it mean?

I'm currently trying to download a game called Commander Keen and this message keeps coming up after I extract the file from WinZip. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application. Then it gives you the option of pressing 'Close' or 'Ignore', both of which terminate the application.

This isn't only with Commander Keen but with most other applications and games. Can someone please tell me what it means and if there's any way I can run it? Thank You.

Was I supposed to go there?

I did all the stps it says up till 13. Now I'm lost. Were the config.nt and autoxec.nt files supposed to have a file extension of .nt or .txt?

What is the windows explorer?

I have spyware on my computer will removing it solve any problems?

You should be doing step 4, and setting those files to read only. Thats all that needs to be done.

 

I did step 4. It still doesn't work.

 

I set the files to .nt instead of .txt

Now when I do Step 4 it says:

destination is not a directory: c:\windows\system32\config.nt.

and the same thing for autoexec.nt and command.nt

Is this supposed to happen?
