I'm looking for pictures and/or information on the 1986 BMW engine used in F1 team benettons car,its the most powerful F1 engine ever made, its a 4 cylinder 1.5 litre turbocharged engine that produced 1500 horsepower for some qualifyings,I want to buy it,only joking :D LOL I just want some picture's and info about this amazing engine, searched in the usual places,BMW,F1,Benetton,I have found some brief history pages of F1,but nothing in detail about this engine,or the kind of acceleration the car was capable of.

I know I'm probably asking in the wrong place most of you guys are probably into nascar or indycar if you like motorsports.

I will appritiate any links or just information if you know anything about the engine or car.

    Thanks RIKKY

I'm kicking myself @ present as I cannot find some pics I took of the 1986 Benetton when it was both at a motorshow and displayed at a car showroom near me!!! If I find them on my HD I will post them.

Thats a great fix for now thanks Halo,0-100mph in 4.8 secs and if I read right thats only with 900 horsepower!probably only used 1st and 2nd gears. It made all that power below 12000 rpm.Thats unheard of these days.

Look at the size of that turbo its as big as the engine and fueled by a secret Nazi patented fuel,Unbelievable,I wonder what the Turbo manifold pressure was?Its got me even more interested now I wanna open the turbo and see how big the fan blades are!LOL.

Just for fun they should take a modern F1 engine block and stick that turbo on it,as a one off, just use it as a show car,a 3 litre 10 cylinder turbocharged engine that revs to 20,000 rpm.

Thanks halo you have doubled the amount of files in my 86 bmw f1 engine folder with this one post,I'm wanna see the dyno chart for the engine, to see how the torque compares a modern f1's engine of 450lbs.

    Thanks Halo

    Dear sir/madam,
I have developed a keen interest in the incredible work done by BMW engineers in design and developement of the BMW M12/13 F4t engine used during Formula 1 seasons in the early 1980's.

It is hailed as one of the greatest engines ever made and is indeed the most powerful F1 engine ever produced, yet with this historic badge I am struggling to find information and pictures on this amazing engineering accomplishment.I have searched libraries, film and browsed various internet pages in search of information, technical specifications, pictures and the results of the testing and commentary from the test engineers as to thier reaction when they realized what they had created and of course what people who drove the full spec racing engine cars experienced.I have ultimately come up with very little information.

Of course you must have much more pressing matters to attend to,but if you could spare a moment to point me in the right direction of where I can learn about this important part of BMW history,I would be very grateful.

    Yours faithfully

    Richard.

Oooh, I know that engine. I think Renault F1 have one in their museum actually, but I can't remember whether its a working one or just chassis and bodywork. I'm pretty sure they have a B186 chassis there.

Theres some info on the engine here: http://www.f1db.com/f1/page/en10044

I'd be interested in the results :)

    Dear sir/madam,
I am writing to you under the advice of paul kester, product advice BMW UK,who was gracious enough to take the time to respond to my email regarding the BMW m12/13 engine, which read:-

Paul has forwarded your address on,in the hope you can be of help in my search for information on this subject, this has become slightly more than just a passing interest, due to unavailability of subject matter to gorge myself on.I understand alot of the work, technologies and specifications will be privalaged,to keep performance advantages in the race teams and BMW's favour, but anything that doesn't fall under this catagory I will have great interest in.

As in my previous email I am incredibly greatfull for you taking the time to even read this letter, any time or help you can spare to assist me is greatly appritiated.

    Yours faithfully

    Richard

Oh well, looks like I'll have to part with some cash, they could of bundled me a couple of copies for kissin ass,Off to BMW I guess.I'v seen some of those history books in dealerships before,if I get any change from £60 $110 I'd be pleasantly suprised.

Anyway thanks to BMW,Paul kester,Hagen Nyncke and Halo for giving me the idea to write,When I get the books I'll let you know if there any good. :D

glad you got that little bit closer Rikky, would have thought they could have found and told you the info tho :( as this method of kiss-ass emailing has served me well many times.. for freebies!

I'm just trying to think which other avenue to take.. sadly the Benetton team is no more so emailing them is out of the window, was thinking the FIA but dont know what records they would hold, reason for me thinking of the FIA is that as governing body they would need to know all the specs of cars/engines to inforce any rules.

It amazes me that the cars are judged internally by the fia,yet non of the secrets are leaked to the different racing camps, those guys that judge whether an engine is legal, with all they have seen would be able to build a CRUMPER of an engine,I'm gonna keep lookin around, search the net for the books see what reviews they get,I like having books anyway, just a big difference between them and getting it free from the web. :D
