1mb to 512kps

I have cogeco cable internet which runs at 1mb download and around 400kb upload, I think.. .

My buddy has 512k DSL and I think it's up and down speed.

Question- When were both in a game, lets say CS, we both always have very simaler ping, it's always around 40.

Because my internet is twice and fast and almost twice as expensive, I wanted to know if there is a way I can maximize preformance, or maby it's capped off somewere.

My PC specs are

P4 1.7 mgz intel pros
256 Ram (eww, i know)
geeforce 2 fx 400 32mb
20 GB hard drive
3com etherlink XL 10/100 PCI

your ping depends greatly on the response time of the servers your data travels over.
You can increase your MTU to 1500, that MAY help.

The extra bandwidth doesnt mean your ping gets much better, it is the amouth of traffic you are able to sent/recive.

 

Right on! Dialup connections still get lower pings because the same amount of traffic has to move through a smaller pipe. Think of an 8 lane highway with traffic flowing smoothly through it. Adding more lanes won't make it go faster since the traffic is already moving as fast as it can.

I bet your computer is also bringing up your ping some. I will tell you that a ping of 40 is superb for online games (at least for quake 3!)
