2 programs on one screen?

I dont know if this makes sense or if I am stating it right but I am going to try. On a desktop if you have two screens you can view different programs; one on one screen and the other on the other screen. For example if you are working on an excell document on one screen the other screen may have the information which you are transfering. My question is, is there a way to see two different items on one laptop screen. Sometimes there are two areas (similar to scenario above) for example taking notes off a teachers web page, or something similar. Is there anything like this that can divide the screen as opposed to minimize and maxim back and fourth?

 

Open both programs, then go down to the task bar, right click on it and choose either "Tile horizontally" or "Tile vertically".

 

Or to size them as you want to, if the windows fill the whole screen, click on the middle button in the top right corner of the window, the one between the red X and the - line, which will make the window fill part of the screen. Then just place the mouse over the edge of the screen until the cursor changes into a double-headed arrow, which can be vertical, horizontal, or diagonal. When the cursor changes, click, hold the click, and drag the edge of the window. You can do this on any side of the window you want.

If you click and drag in a corner, you can resize the window horizontally and vertically at the same time.
