Hey Im really new to this so bear with me

I have a problem with the network in my house, I have it working with the internet but im unable to use p2p etc because I can't forward ports. My current setup is:

ADSL modem/1 port router -----> wireless router -----> 2 PCs (1 PC wired to the wireless router, 1 PC using wirless adapter)

See the problem is I basically have two routers, and if I try to forward the ports on both routers, it does nothing. Ive been looking all over the internet for the solution, reading things about DHCP servers, DMZ and some other things. Oh and I don't really want to have to buy any new equipment, Im a little short on cash at the moment.

I tried to do what it said but didn't really know exactly what I was doing...and messed up the whole network so had to reinstall the routers lol.

I don't know if you need more information, both PCs running XP, modem/router is Dynamode (not sure model number), wireless router is Netgear 11mbps MR814 V3.

Sorry about the essay and thanks in advance!

See if your dsl modem can be turned into a bridge, thus only having one router :)

I already tried that, but theres no option to change it. On the box it has two boxes which one says bridge next to it and the other router, and the router box is ticked.

Thanks for trying but any other ideas?

does the wireless router have multiple ports on the back? ie 1 WAN port and multiple LAN ports? If so, instead of plugging your adsl modem into the WAN port of the wireless router, plug it into one of the regular ports instead, that should bypass its routing functions and make it function like a normal switch.

Then you should only need to open ports on the adsl modem.

Yeah it does have them (well if WAN means the "internet" port anyway, I will try that asap

    Ill keep you updated

    Thanks for the help

OK ive tried putting the modem into the LAN ports but when I do this I can't get the internet to work and the internet light does not glow on the front (didn't really expect it to though if there was nothing in WAN port.

Is there some way I am supposed to configure my routers if Im doing this? Or does it just not support it?

    Thanks

are you using static ip's or DHCP to allocate ip addresses on the network?

check to make sure the modem/router is the one assigning ip addresses and is doing the authentication to logon to your adsl service. The DHCP and NAT should only be enabled on the modem/router, not the wireless router.

I dont actually see what DHCP has to do with my problem though. I have set up a static IP on this PC (wireless), but the wired one downstairs my by using DHCP, not sure.

How do i know whether my wireless router has NAT enabled, and what exactly is NAT.

Is what you said in the last post what im supposed to be doing with the modem put into LAN port rather than WAN or have we scrapped that now??

Thanks for all your help by the way! Quick responses are really appreciated

Oh also, if anybody else has any ideas/solutions, feel free to chip in!

yes keep the modem in the LAN port.

NAT=network address translation, it basically enables multiple hosts on a private network to access the Internet using a single public IP address.

DHCP allows your router to automatically assign ip addresses rather than you having to assign them yourself to each pc.

If NAT and DHCP are enabled on both your routers then they can cause conflicts, that is why only one device should be NAT and DHCP enabled. In your case you want the adsl/router to be NAT and DHCP enabled and the wireless router to have these functions disabled. Also you will need to check which device is doing the authentication to log on to your adsl service. You want the adsl modem to do this also, and put the wireless router into bridge mode.

You can check this by going into the configuration menus of your routers.

what I am trying to do is to get the wireless router be a passive device so that the adsl modem can take care of all functions like port forwarding, NAT, DHCP and authentication. This way the wireless router wont interfere and will only be acting like a combined switch/access point.

OK i will try this all now

Oh by the way, my connection doesn't ever require a logon but I did enter the logon details in the modem and didn't in wireless so I think that is fine. I can't find any options for turning the wireless router to bridge mode, and Im not sure about whether you can disable NAT on it. Is there any other words etc that these things might be called?

Thanks for all the great help

OK ive done that, and I can get internet on the wired PC, with the modem into the LAN port of the wireless router rather than WAN.

Thing is though I can't get internet access on the PC on the wireless. As it doesnt actually think there is internet now do I like need to enable file sharing with the modem like its a PC or something? Or do I need to make static routes or something like that (I don't even know what they are lol).

I feel I'm really close now so dont give up lol. This has been really bugging me for some time now.

OK, sorry about triple post lol but Edit option seems to dissappear after a while...

Well majinbuu, i have found out why it was working on wired and not wireless PC. It was because downstairs was automatically getting IP, but up here had a static ip of 0.3 But if modem goes in LAN, it should have a 1.x ip.

Anyways i have got it working all over the house. I have forwarded port 14401, for using ABC bittorrent client, but running ABC still slows down my internet connection considerably and Im not achieving speeds > 20KB/s in ABC.

I think i have definitely got rid of the routing ability of my wireless router as the logon page for it no longer exists...

Should it technically work now or is there something I am still doing wrong?

if your connection slows down when downloading a torrent, it is usually due to the upload speed being set too high. Believe it or not, this can severely affect your download speed. For example, my speeds with my isp are 1.5Mbit download and 320kbit upload(40kbyte). So in my bittorrent program I limit the upload speed to 20kbyte/sec max.

Your download speed with torrents will vary considerably anyway. This is due to the amount of seeders and leachers there are with each torrent. I usually get speeds of around 20k to 100k, it all depends on each individual torrent.

I'm not sure of your internet speed, but if you limit the upload speed in your bittorrent program to around half your max upload speed you should see some gains. ISP's usually give their speeds in kilobits or megabits per second, so divide that number by 8 to get it in bytes which is what your torrent program will want.

I know bittorrent speeds can vary and Ill try the upload thing.

Before we got the network and we had a normal modem I could get up to 200KB/s+ with bittorrent but usually around 100. The thing I am downloading has a decent amount of seeders..

Anyways ill get back to you on this, time for bed!
