    Hey Guys,
I wanted to take my 2nd HD outta my old rig and put it in my new one, but I have a few files still one it( don't care about them). I was wondering if I could just install it in my new rig and use it, or would I have to reformat it to this computer. My old computer for some odd reason will not read my Windows XP Home CD. So I cant just wipe the partitions off of it like I wanted to. I also have a copy of Microsoft office installed on my new computer when I bought it from a friend and I don't have the CDs for it so I'd like to keep them. Is there a way to format the 2nd HD and remove those few files without "harming" my new computer?
Thanks, I have been trying to figure this out for a while

    Hi

Yes you can use it and in the same was as a slave 2nd drive, but a question first is this drive ATA (IDE) or SATA?

If IDE then you will need to set the small jumper on the back as Slave and off you go, if SATA then your fine, just double check in the BIOS that your main HDD is the first boot device and not the newely installed one, as I had this issue the other day, installed WHS 2011 on one drive only, then added the two other HDDs in once the Server OS was installed and rebooted, no OS found, the BIOS has put one of the other drives and the 1st boot device.

You shouldnt have to reformat, but you can, but what may happen is that you may need to take Ownership of the files and folders if you get an access error to the files.

If you want to format the 2nd HDD then this should not affect your main C drive, just be carefull what drive you right click and choose Format too in My Computer/Computer (can do this from Disk Management in Adminstrative Tools > Computer Management).

Just as an addon to your question
One thing I would now suggest if you dont have CDs for software is employ a Image Backup routine and Easeus ToDo is good and Free with instructions on what to do to make backups, you can use your 2nd HDD to image your main 1st one with Windows and Office on.
