I have a 3 1/2 floppy A drive on my Intel Pentium 4 Processor with 1.60 GHz and 224 MB RAM. The OS is Windows XP Professional 2002. It's 2002 because I have not updated it because I don't have internet connection on it. The A drive won't read any floppy disk I insert. How can I make it read my disks?

Can you see the floppy drive from My Computer?

What does it do when you put in a floppy?

Have you checked in Device Manager?

Hmm when I put a floppy disk in the drive, nothing happens. When i try to open the floppy disk files, the computer says "Please insert a disk into drive A." O and I have checked Device Manager and the floppy disk drive appears to be there.

Does everything in device manager look ok, no yellow question marks or exclamation points?

What service pack level do you have installed?

I don't see any yellow question marks or exclamation points, and I don't have Service Pack 2 installed.

My first suggestion would be to get SP2 installed or at least SP1a, if you can't download it from the internet then order a free CD from Microsoft. Also, see if you can borrow one from a friend.

Order Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD

After you install this update, if it still does it then I would be willing to bet you need a new floppy drive.

hey i went to that site u gave and firefox popped up with a message saying that the site doesnt seem to have an authorized certificate. it could be another organization pretending to be microsoft. so i checked the official microsoft site and couldnt find a SP2 cd that they mail to you.

If you would like to download it and have the internet on that computer, then I will include a direct download link below.

    Windows XP Service Pack 2

This is the next and last thing to try, if SP2 didnt fix it, it would be obvious this is the problem.
