    Hello
I'm new to this forum and in fact new to forums in general so if I make mistakes, sorry.

My particular point at the moment is concerning the flashing notice at the top of the Major Geeks home page (and it appears on other sites as well) that announces "You have 3 messages waiting for you!". As if!!! I think Major Geeks is a fantastic site and I have used it on many occasions, but oh, that irritaing notice. I thought Popup Blocker might deal with it, but no, of course it won't. It's there permanently, not 'popping up'. Naviscope? No!. What then? Flashing away there, meaningless, how do you get rid of it? Somebody must know.

Majorgeeks doesn't have any pop-ups tat I know of. Perhaps this is a piece of spyware the recognizes when you're on a vb board and pops that message accordingly. It also may be a notification for your PM box if you have that option set. Check your PM's by clicking the "Private MEssages" link at the upper right corner of the board.
Other than that I recommend you check out the spyware forum for the basic spyware removal rundown.
    Welcome to the board.

Thanks for reading my message. With a clean new browser enabled, all cache and cookies removed, www.majorgeeks.com gets the offending 'You have 3 messages' at the top of the first page using either IE or Firefox.

It's a banner ad. Ignore it if you don't like it or get the adblocker extension for firefox.

Thanks. Now I know the right words to use to describe it plus practical help. Difficult job to describe something when you don't know the right words. Thanks a lot.

    Hi allenjeff
Hope you find an answer to that one.I am being redundant but they are, from my understanding and experieces as a fledgling marketeer, paid ads.The first time I started using the internet,I was curious about anything and everything that moved,flashed,blinked,ect...I learned never, ever, under any circumstance,to point and click my cursor at those intriguing lil ads.Getting rid of them is not an easy solution. But I am sure you will find a download that removes all adverts from your sites, located on the homepage.Hope you find something that works and be sure to let us know.

Thanks for all replies. I have found something called Stop The Popup from http://www.dirfile.com/stop_the_popup.htm

It is shown as Freeware so I started to install it but it then Zone Alarm said it wanted internet access and when I allowed it, it started to download tzsar.exe whixh turned out to be a trial period for something called Tracks Zapper (which I don't want). Also it said it had made alterations to my 'hosts' file. I'm out of my depth now. I uninstalled Stop The Popup (the setup had apparently not completed, but I'm not sure) and I don't know what the hosts file had in it before so I don't know what alterations may have been made. Sigh!!!

Does anyone know anything about Stop The Poup? Is it a scam? Dangerous? What?

@alanjeff, in your first post, said that "this was you first time, within a forum"....I wondered, how you got here in the first place?....

in my way of thinking, there is two parts of the MajorGeeks site, this one at the forums, and the downloadable program site...you can find at the forums, the Help & Technical Forums...to help with most all problems...or check out the majorgeeks .com for more help.......Frequently Asked Questions (Read Only), will help you and others, because others had the problems too...

...and then you'll find, the a few of the add's pay so that MajoGeeks stays a free site........hope this helps........wobbles

    Thank you to FW190.
I assume then, that nobody knows anything about 'Stop the Popup' freeware.

Today I saw the banner in question... At work, on IE. At home on FF (not adblock though) with norton add blocker, I do not see it! :)

It is nicer and cleaner without it, but I can't say that it is THAT offensive! It is quite small, and easy to ignore.

People watch TV and accept the (approx.)15 minutes of ads for every hour of their favorite show, no one boycotts their favorite radio station because of ads. Why? Because everyone understands that TV and radio stations have bills to pay, and the money comes from somewhere but they don't make that connection when it comes to the internet. I'm willing to tolerate that flashing ad for the service I receive just the same as I'm willing to tolerate the commercials in return for 'free' TV and radio.

i don't mind ads too much, but the ads that squish text because they are inline with the article are thoroughly annoying. I am more likely to ignore those over any other sidebar ad.

Never found that the Ads on Majorgeeks have been over the top unlike some sites!! all you have to be is a bit warey of clicking everything that flashes/pops up on any webpage.. advertisers just like on TV will try all methods to make you click :)

As mentioned earlier, if you wish to keep sites like this free then some advertising is necassary.... read this artical on a blog the other day, makes you think who's gonna pay in the end?

    http://poptech.blogspot.com/2005/03/why-adblock-is-bad-for-free-internet.html

good arguments both for and against.

    Interesting read, Halo!

It is the popups that usually irritate me. Fixed banners never hurt me. But I'm the cautious type... Never been THAT trigger happy with the mouse... Lol. I'm the one who doesn't fall for the "Stare for 25 seconds at this image, and you will find Nirvana" -I know I will find it if I stare, through a bloody heart attack! :D

    Yeah, those are bothersome.
Me too, the ones that don't interfere with the rest of the page, no problem to me.

Pretty interesting, but I wouldn't agree with the author that AdBlock will "do away with free content as we know it" any more than TiVo will do away with network television as we know it.

Well if you do I did CPR training yesterday :D

I'd agree with you in the short term no AdBlock wont affect free content on the net... but the more net users get savvy to ad~blocking, then less ads will be clicked, with the result in the revenue gained by webowners is wiped out! then another source of revenue has to be sought to pay for hosting, bandwidth etc and where will that come from?

this is not going to be an overnight thing but IF and WHEN it MAY happen.. who knows.
