About 3 weeks ago I bought a Toshiba Satelite A105. CeleronM, 1.5 ghz., 60GB.hard drive, 512MB Ram, added 512 more. Windows XP home.

2 days ago I was just surfing around; I think I had just updated Java or something like that; it was completely normal, and I had to reboot.
Screen came up saying NTDLR missing press Ctrl,Alt,Del to restart. Which that was just a vicious circle!
I could only get into F2 and F12, So I couldn't get into my safe mode and all that. Finally I called Toshiba tech. support, and they went through basically everything I had just tried, and then told me to run the recovery CD.
I had everything pretty much backed up on flash drives so it wasn't that big of a deal as far as data loss,
The whole fact that I had to do a recovery on a brand new computer however was!!
I magine my surprise (and fury) when I had to do it again not even 24 hrs. later. Same situation happened at a restart. Called Toshiba back and they told me to again run the recovery disk. So that's where I am at now. So far so good. Whenever I do a restart I hold my breath!! Why did this happen? Did I do something wrong? Can it be fixed? Please someone help! Anything would be appreciated!!

Same error both times? I would be concerned that the hard drive is failing.

I guess that you could try to format your hard drive then try it again. However, I dont know that if XP came on the computer when you got it so I dont know if it will stay on there.

Yeah same error both times. Do you mean did the computer come with a XP disc? No it did not. What would make the hard drive fail already?

In addition to what Adrynalne said, it could also be memory related. I noticed that you added 512 megs. and I'm sure the system specs say that it will support it, but recently ran into a similar problem with a friend's notebook that was upgraded to 1 gig of ram. Try downloading Memtest86+ from this site and running it for 4 or 5 complete cycles. Hope this helps.:)

    Crappy parts.

Seriously. Its one of the most common parts to fail, especially in new machines. Anything mass produced has a larger chance for failure or defects. Then add in the fact that hard drives have parts moving at high speed while in use. Then add in the fact its a laptop, and subject to vibration, etc. Any clue who makes the hard drive? You could download a fitness test.

How do I run that memtest? If it is parts, is thaty something that Toshiba will replace?

If its under warranty and not a problem you caused, you bet.

How can you tell whose fault it is? I have uninstalled and installed quite a bit of programs. These Toshibas come loaded with all kinds of crap I didn't want!

You would know. For instance, if you dropped it, it probably wouldn't be covered;)

No I didn't drop it. I am wondering about like software and stuff. I have downloaded different programs from a friend by remote assistance, also from limewire, ect. Nothing ever came up saying that any of these files were corrupted. I am just worried that the manufactuer is going to try and say that it is a fault of mine and I am stuck with a piece of crap. Are there any tools I can use to find out for sure if the hard drive is failing? And if it is, is it something that goes in and out? Cause I am on this computer now...???

Software issues won't void your warranty.
