I recently recovered my harddrive following a virus. I've updated all the MS updates, including SP3, but I now have 6 very large files sitting on my drive under "My Computer"

    60db11740ef0cb33ee (19 files of 59 mgs)
    61b2bbb19c7cea4600995 (19 files of 59mgs)
    582a3f05013c773856 (28 files of 56 mgs)
    6120_v2_w2kXPO3ps (162 files 57 mgs)
    aecc4f3357c5b70e7c0b64a0f643 (19 files of 59 mgs)
    C2a65d6e4a5d2a4bc9113d (116 files of 16mgs)

Can someone tell me what these are and if they can be safely removed?
Thanks for any help you can give me.

    Hi

Those look like temp file install codes but they would be random file names, but are they in the root of your C: Drive or if not what folder are they in exactly.

But have you rebooted after your install of Windows and SP3? if not do so and test Windows out and if its working ok, you should just be able to delete those files, but do first tell us what exact location they are in as items listed directly in My Computer are almost always a media drive of some sort and not files.

So inside the top listed one, what are some of the 19 files called, just need a few names?

    Thanks for your reply, David.
I restored the harddrive last week and SP3 on Monday, so the machine has been running well for several days.
The 6 files are located: under
    My Computer
    Local Disk (c:)
6 individual files (followed by Documents and Settings, Program Files, etc.)

I don't know how long they have been there, but I first noticed them Monday.
They have not changed in size since then, but I know they were not on the previous version of the drive.
What I would like to do is set a restore point and then delete them....yes?...no?

Just realized that I didn't fully answer your question.
Inside the first file is the following:

    1033
    batchparser90.dll
    hotfixexpress
    msvcp80.dll
    osql
    sqlcmd
    sqldiscoveryapi.dll

    Hi

Yes that seems a great idea to be sure, in restore point and delete, I'm pretty certain that they are for some reason update files that have not removed themselves after they have installed, they normally do.

Thank you for your help, David.
That's what I will do...set a restore point and delete.
I just noticed that the dates of 5 out of 6 are 3/15...the same day I reformated.
The other is Tuesday, the day I installed SP3.
    Thanks again.

    Hi

No probs, and I just checked a few of those files out and just out of curiosity do you have Microsoft Office installed and likely Access as those files are part of a lite version SQL 2005 which allows connection of databases to other apps and DBs, which likely would come in an update if you had been installing Windows/Office.

But time scales you mention are another good indicator these are left over update files, normally these are deleted or some go in the update folder.

I just set a restore point, deleted the files, ran through CCleaner and defraged, rebooted and everything seems to be fine. I do have MS Office, so I opened both Excel and Word...again, they seem fine.
    Thank you so much.
