This is already posted in software. I don't know which section is correct. I am sorry for double posting. But i realized this is better suited for hardware. And I don't know how to edit posts. :yum

    Hi!

I am in an dilema. I really love windows xp. I have on problems with it. Everything works great.

Recently i have upgraded to 4gb of ram. And i decided to go with vista x64. But after a day of usage or so. I begin getting annoying problems.

For example. Lan parties fail. Games need a lot of work to start up. Xp clearely wins here. Vista's a bust.

but. The problem at hand is the 4gb of ram. I heard xp cant handle it.

would i get slowdowns with xp because of my ram?

If not, xp is clearly the way to go.

    finally, what about xp x64?

    thx for the advice.

I know that x32 can use 4gb of ram. :)

What i dont know is the performance. I heard it drops on x32 compared to x64?

XP/Vista/Windows 7 32-BIT will recognise 4GB of RAM but will only use around 3.25GB of it, where as XP/Vista/Windows 7 64-BIT uses 4GB as a minimum. 64-BIT is without a doubt the future as it can handle way more RAM for a start, but it's the adoption rate that is holding it back.

There are still Windows 98 users out there, if 80% of Windows users use 32-BIT OS's then hardware & software manufacturers will stay away from 64-BIT until it more worth their while. Thankfully those of us who use their sites everyday who are looking for 64-BIT drivers are helping the progression & those people who would give you a :confused face if you mentioned "DRIVERS" don't look for them because they don't know what they are LOL

The more people who adopt 64-BIT, the faster 64-BIT drivers will mature and become commonplace. Put it this way if more people migrate to 64-BIT OS's then my guess is Windows 8 won't come in a 32-BIT ver ;)

In terms of performane there will be difference as x64 bit versions of windows xp/vista support up to 16GB ram, so yeah just get the windows xp x64 and you should be using the 4GBRAM to its full potential without any compatibility problems with any games like vista has.

Phew. Installed XP x32. It reports a mere 3000mb of ram. EVEREST does the same.

EVEREST says I have 2x2GB of ram, but reports only 3.

    System memory: 3072 MB (DDR2-800 DDR2 SDRAM)

    DIMM1: OCZ Gold XTC OCZ2G8002G 2 GB DDR2-800 DDR2 SDRAM (6-6-6-18 @ 400 MHz) (5-5-5-15 @ 333 MHz) (4-4-4-12 @ 266 MHz)

    DIMM3: OCZ Gold XTC OCZ2G8002G 2 GB DDR2-800 DDR2 SDRAM (6-6-6-18 @ 400 MHz) (5-5-5-15 @ 333 MHz) (4-4-4-12 @ 266 MHz)

...uh. Weird. Does that mean I can only use 3gb of my ram. So I am wasting 1gb of ram?

    Is XP x64 working well?

Another question. Do the current generatoin games utilize all 4gb of ram?

Will the x64 be better for games than x32. Is the 1GB RAM a serius performance loss? I mean its lost money, but in terms of GAME performace...

Well yes you are kind of wasting 1GB of RAM because you paid for 4GB, so it looks like you will have to get windows xp x64 ;)

In terms of game performance there won't be a difference as most modern games require at least 2GB but it's worth installing windows xp x64 so you can utilize all of the 4GB.

So the XP x64 works fine perfectly fine? No problems? If it works on x32 it will on 64? (I am not talking the drivers. I am talking about applications and LAN games and stuff)
