A couple buy a perfectly square piece of land and in one corner they build a house taking up exactly one quarter of the property as shown (if it comes out properly!). Then they are set a puzzle by their four children. They each want a piece of the remainder of the property exactly the same size and shape as each other. Can you help guys and gals?

I thought I had it using triangles, but I was wrong.

This makes no mention of whether the entire remainder of the property be divided equally among them. Otherwise, it would be easy to give them each a piece with the same size and shape . . . . ;)

So simplistic.. I really should have thought of that.

I did loads of ways :)

I thought I had it when I split it up into 8 equal parts then co-joined , but nah :(

Thanks for the time "Killer" :)

The simplest solutions are always the hardest things to get, I was drawing parrelelograms, triangles, etc for ages before I thought of doing the L shapes.

Technically, you can't build a house in the corner like that. It has to be a certain distance from the property line. I'm sure it varies for different municipalities, but around here, I thinks it's five or ten feet. ;)

And....if he'd built the house central on the land it would have been much simpler to divide up the remaining land between his 4 children ;)

I see problems down the road when the parents are out of the picture, and the kids have to divide the property again.
