5tb Lifetime Cloud Storage For $99 - Too Good To Be True?

Saw an offer today on PC World from a company called Polar Backup (https://www.polarbackup.com).

    5TB (yes, terabytes) of secure storage - LIFETIME - for $99! They also have 1TB @ $39 or 2TB @ $59.

Given the cost of Carbonite, OneDrive and other yearly subscriptions, on one hand this sounds like the Deal of the Century - pay once, never pay to renew. On the other hand, there is a part of me screaming it sounds too good to be true. Even they use AWS (Amazon Web Services) for the storage, I can't figure out how such a company could stay in business doing this if I live another 30-40 years.

Does anyone have experience with using Polar Backup or a similar "lifetime" cloud service? If so, has it been good so far?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

    According to PolarBackup.com the price is 5TB @ $119.99/Year.

True on their website, but, if you go to PC World Shop or other "deal" sties, the $99/$59/$39 I posted is available as of today (10/10/19).

Still wondering if it's worth it or too good to be true.

I'm wondering if PC World forgot to append "per year" to the prices. If you look at the pricing on Polar Backup's web site, they are the same as PC World's at 1TB and 2TB, but $20 more at 5TB. I just don't see how Polar Backup can afford to give a lifetime subscription at a one-year price. You should contact PC World and ask them to clarify this.

One last thing: that "lifetime subscription" is actually the lifetime of Polar Backup. If the company goes out of business, that's the end of your subscription. If PC World's prices are correct, then I don't see Polar Backup being in business for very long.

    Confession time.

With an additional 10% off coupon ($89.99 for 5TB), I decided to try it. It is the biggest piece of SH*T I have come across in years!

It randomly turns itself off. When turned back on, it forgets where it was in the previous backup and takes forever to figure out where it needs to pick up at. After running overnight, the PC becomes deathly slow due to it eventually taking up to 6GB of RAM. Zero online help. An email about the memory hog issue hasn't been answered after five days.

I too will be taking this up with PayPal in an attempt to get a refund. Aside from falling for it in the first place, my only regret is I wished I had used my AMEX card to pay - one call to their customer service center and the charge would have been reversed at the drop of a hat.

I actually bought this when it was released about 3 weeks ago. I thought I had jumped too soon but after I used it for a couple of days and backed up all of my really critical docs and images/videos I felt like it was money well spent. Even if they stay in business for a couple of years it still cost me a lot less than an annual plan of equivalent size with other providers. It’s already been said but I just hope they allow everyone to retrieve their data should the worst happen and they need to close their doors!

Bought the 2Tb plan for $59.00 and feel like a total fool. After running a backup of about 560Gb for two days, I got only 5Gb uploaded! And that was with my 6Mb/s upload speed, throttle off and multi-threading on!

    JUNK! STAY AWAY!

Just got 5Tb of iDrive for $3.48 for the first year ($79.99/year thereafter and it is a subscription so you agree to pay for at least another year when time is up - sale going on right now). It took only about 11 hours to upload my data. Lightening fast.

Now trying to get my money back through MasterCard. Hopefully I’ll be able to with no problem.

I'm just looking at the same site and it's giving me the price for the 5TB for £83.33 which i'm not sure what that is in dollars but reduced from £830.00
