    Now that was funny!

"Even if you don't mind viewing your Internet through a two-inch window at the bottom of your screen (maybe you like to pretend you're seeing the world through the slit of a knight's helmet or something),"

"So, you're starting from scratch. Think of it as a second chance. A fresh start; to clean up all off those bad habits, and to treat your computer like the crucial yet fragile tool that it is."

    :-D:-D

No $#!t huh.....I recently had a out of town family member who's computer was basically shutting down on her. Browser was screwing up, one of her freeware programs wouldn't even open up. I downloaded the exact same freeware program I had on my computer onto her as a replacement for her old program(both from MG) and then her browser stops working. OMG this lady wouldn't shut up about how I broke her browser. For those who are wondering it was VLC media player that supposedly broke her browser. She couldn't even admit that her computer had Adware and programs shutting down on her well before I got to her computer.

It is for this reason that I tell everyone I help that they must accept that I might destroy their computer in the process of fixing it, to the point where no repair guy can fix it. Surprisingly everyone has said, "That's okay, I'd have to buy a new one anyways." Getting that little thing out of the way helps a lot with free fix disasters.

That's excellent Wenchie. Being a small time TFWIGWC, I don't have much experience with these extreme "clients".

Oh. One other thing. I've read some of your rants etc in the past. The article reads like you wrote it. Did you?:-D:-D

I don't fix anything anymore for anyone except for my gf who I know doesn't do porn or hacking etc. The last time I fixed one was the second time around, for free(at least he brought beer) and told him his son was into porn. The next time he asked to get it fixed I just did a false couple of minutes of 'diagnosis' and just told my friend that it was beyond my expertise, go and pay a qualified professional.

Well, I lost my reputation as the go to guy but I got a lot of time and peace since then. As the guy in the article seemed to say, you give someone a free hand and it doesn't sink in, pay a stranger and they then get it.

I had the pleasure of having a great meal at one friend's where they served up a great AAA/Prime rib-eye steak grilled to perfection with all the fixins' and some nice 18 year old single malt to wash it down with.:yum I wish their machine would get hit again but I guess they did the updates and followed the safe surfing guidelines that I had mentioned. Too bad but I guess I want some more steak and single malt!:-D

As to the guy who I sent off to a tech, I heard through the grapevine that his son got a whooping and the machine was moved into the living room. At least 'they finally got it'!roflmao

Yep, that all sounds hauntingly familiar rolleyes. I quit being the TFWIGWC some time ago.
If someone I don't know that well has the old "My computer is real sloow", "I can't play my streaming videos" or similar complaint, I just tell them my rates and that I have no guarantee it can be fixed and that they'll get a "look at my computer" fee, regardless. That cures most of them or at least earns me money.
Goes against my grain to an extent, but hey, I get my time back again.:-D I mean really, I could spend my term earning real money with my contract clients, or spend a day or two fixing stupidity for peanuts or free. I know which I'd rather be doing.

I had one of those idiots the guy mentioned, he asked me to fix a slow PC and i found he had no AV so i cleaned it up and installed Avast free plus MBAM, three weeks later i got the call "what did you do to my PC".
It would not boot so i got out my trusty boot disk and fired it up. guess what he had removed Avast and MBAM because the warnings were annoying him.
I fixed it a second time and re-installed Avast and MBAM with the stern warning that if he removed them again "don't come back" and a friend has told me it has cost a small fortune going to the repair shop with the same problems.
Some people are just too stupid for their own good.

That goes without saying in that many of us on Majorgeeks fit this criteria!

This is a classic as it amounts to most of the support calls or issues I or we deal with daily, especially the malware team here at Majorgeeks.

You have a few different types of geek

    1. The actual geek, who gives great info and advice based on real world knowledge
    2. The pseudo geek who search engines their replies and adds superfluous text that is supposed to impress.
    3. The trainee, they are great as they are willing to learn
    4. The know it all, who knows nothing and just adds to the "what is the best?" threads.

I could add more to this list but stopping with the core list of ones that match the article.

Good god, David. I'm #2. Although the superfluous text is out, for me. More like the good (short hand) telegram from me and a linky. :-D I do try out fixes, even experiment before posting, on MGs.
The one thing I'm Ok with is HJT, OTL, DDS, ComboFix logs and writing the scripts, to fix. Only for close friends then. :-D

    Cheers..

I fall into a completely different category...when something goes wrong with mine, I spend approximately 30 minutes trying to fix it. If it takes longer than that, I pay someone. My time is more valuable than that. LOL To be fair, it's always my desktop, which I've pretty much given over to my mother since I bought my laptop last spring. If it's only me using a machine there are almost never problems (go figure). :-D

You're Welcome. I didn't think this could be appreciated anywhere more than here. I laughed my butt off while I was reading it, being as I've said most of these things in the past.

And no, i didn't write it. But I definitely could have. :p

Hye Sikvik I think you sell yourself short as in what you give to this forum and your a 1a really ;)

But have you not thought of helping out malware team out, I know it would depend on the time you can devote out of your busy working and family life but if you know those apps its a great start and would help the team here, just a thought.

David, thanks for the kind words, and assessment :)
Work and family does keep me busy. Then again... people who find time to do all, are truly busy.
While training as a Malware fighter, I had a great teacher, an MSVP all the way through, (but for the last two logs) Fresher to Senior.

Then a new teacher :( - and I hit a snag with a ridiculous reg fix. With all due respect, to the teacher, my fix was correct.

It was down to a (, ) IIRC in the fix.

The teacher did post back, after a few days- that the fix fix was good, but their attitude was all wrong. :(
I'd have needed at least another 6 months training, before approaching chaslang.

    Cheers..

ah now thats the bad bit about many on the net and even MSVPs in that they do not dumb down the info posted and take time to deal with the novice users,

I think you will find that you are good to go for our malware forum and do have a chat with Chas (Charlie) as he doesn't bite much.... may gnaw a bit at your fingers but he is friendly :)

  16. CatT

CatT I can't follow the rules

As someone extremely anal about anyone TOUCHING my machine, I need to see SMOKE coming out the back before I would even CONSIDER asking anyone to "have a look".

3 years back I suffered an HDD crash -- at a point when I had no recent backups -- and had to get a pro to "rescue" the contents.

To this day I am paranoid that he's got a copy of my every last file buried away somewhere. My entire LIFE.

    :(
