Hi! The upgrade train of my house just advanced a little bit, and I've recieved a 6600GT AGP. Everything appears to be running fine, except one thing. I can't run any of my videos on *any* of my players. (WMP, Realplayer, BSplayer, DIVX player). I've gotten the latest drivers, and my previous card was a ATI Radeon 9000 series. I've reinstalled the drivers, but that didn't help. The problem is, whenever I try to boot up a video, my computer starts to drag. Like from 70 FPS to 1 in 2 seconds flat. I'm out of ideas, could anyone please help?

Did you use this card to upgrade a Dell or sumthing similar? it is possible your power supply isnt able to handle the new card. If u know, what is the wattage (is that even a word?) of your psu?

    Zorkman Private E-2

No, my computer is 100% custom built, no Dell, or Intel parts. I doubt it's the power supply, because the huge fan thats built into it is operating at 100%, and the video card itself is operating at 100%, just it kills my compy to play video.

have u tried it with games? does it have the same problem?

also, make sure all the ATI drivers are COMPLETELY uninstalled by running Driver Cleaner Pro after uninstalling the drivers. After that, reinstall the Nvidia ones.

    Zorkman Private E-2

ATI drivers may have burned out the Nvidia ones? Okay, I'll try that, thanks.
It also works perfectly with my games.

Nope, still has the same problem. No errors, just slows down my system.

Sometimes a reformat & reinstall of windows is the only cure for problems like this when switching from ATI to nvidia.

ATI drivers are notorious for not completely uninstalling and the left over driver files will cause problems with the nvidia drivers.

Like viper_boy403 said, It's really crucial to use a driver cleaner program to remove ATI drivers so hopefully you have taken his advice.

I had uninstalled the ATI drivers beforehand, thought that was enough. After Viper mentioned it, I did grab Driver Cleaner Pro 1.50, wiped away all ATI and nVidia drivers and reinstalled the nVidia ones. But reinstalling windows seems a little bit much for this kind of problem.

Nope. No effect. Still bogs down my system by a longshot.

No I 100% disagree with this, a reformat isn't always the answer. Just removing the old device from device manager and installing the latest drivers from the nVidia website is fine.

I presume you have the molex plugged into the card?

You have latest drivers and software for playing videos?

  12. Zorkman

    Zorkman Private E-2

Yes, I have the latest updates, yes I've plugged everything in. Everything but playing videos works fine.

    lol, you hurt my feelings.

My point is that it's most likely going to take more time and effort trying to solve this problem that it would to back up the files and reformat/reinstall windows. A clean install is a good thing especially when installing new gpu's.

I'm new to this particular forum but I know a thing or two about building, upgrading and repairing computer systems.

I hope you are able to find a solution Zorkman. :)

I have no DVD player, and I just found that the card is running slower than it should be. I'm going to go inside my box and fiddle with things, see if that helps.

  16. Zorkman

Alright, I've found that it also seems to be handling cutscenes poorly, to boot.

You have a driver representation problem, it sounds like your drivers for this problem are pointing towards your old display drivers or to a null feild, I could be wrong...

Try this... grab Windows Install Cleanup here:
    Windows Installer Cleanup Utility

Install and run it, if your system video drivers or core system drivers, aka chipset, etc come up, try de-installing them via Add/Remove, then re-run the windows installed cleanup utility and make sure there entries are removed, if they are still showing in the utility then nuke em with the tool, restart, then re-install the drivers you removed.

Hopefully this helps, I had the exact same problem when I swapped my FX5200 for my current GF6600GT, if that fails, then I`ll keep trying to help you with option step 2:

Can you display your system specifications in detail, with model numbers if at all possible, CPU Speed/Ext Functions/Revision, Memory, Mainboard Model Number & Chipset (SiS, Intel, VIA, AMD, etc)

As another not, what was your old videocard model/chipset? And have you installed a codec package on your system like the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack?

Where do I find the model numbers? It also appears that my sound and video card are sharing the same IRQ port (Hope that matters.)

    Hi Zorkman,

You can get the model specific details by using a program called Everest, located here:

    EVEREST HOME EDITION

In regards to the soundcard and videocard sharing the same IRQ, that isn't good, your videocard technically should be by default at IRQ 16, soundcards usually hang at IRQ 5 or 6, sometimes any other, my onboard audio is at IRQ 18, that isnt the problem though, your soundcard and videocard should NOT be sharing an IRQ!

Jump into your BIOS settings, Look for the IRQ settings, usually in Advance, and make sure Assign IRQ automatically or alike is selected, maybe this will help, I think we need a hardware settings wizard to pop in and lend a hand via this area!

Also run Everest and jot down all your system specifications, Everest will detail it, I think you can output a file or your choice, with system settings displayed, that way you can just cut 'n' paste.

EDIT: Also restart your computer, then when its at the post screen detecting hard drives, etc, hit the pause key and jot down your bios version, it may resort to a BIOS upgrade, also it may not, I am reading your motherboard manual at the moment via asus.com

And I've looked into the BIOS, it only has 2 settings up to IRQ 15 on it, Reserved and PCI. My soundblaster seems infatuated with IRQ 16, though, and I can't seem to move it... any help on that kind of thing?

Heres the EVEREST report. I didn't know if you wanted just hardware, so I did that "all" option.

    Hey There,

Ok, been flatout here trying to work out possibilities, I see your system is a VIA chipset, I am not too keen on VIA personally, I`ve also had bad luck building AMD + VIA, but nether the less this particular chipset/board is a popular board for performance and stability, so I am not going to be biased.

I can't really think of anything in particular that could be causing the problem, well I can, but there is too many diffrent testing to resolve the issue that way, so here is what I would do, and if this fails, it means its a hardware fault, or your system needs a fresh format & install, but I think you`ll find that the steps below will rectify the problem.

    1) ***GO HERE*** - Download the latest BIOS for your board, extract it to C:\BIOS\, then download the Windows Flash Utility from that location in the BIOS section aswell, flash your new BIOS, making sure you don't even move the mouse when it starts till it's finished! Also making sure you select to make the new BIOS settings at default, the flash program should ask you if you would like this, just select yes. Once this is done, restart your system...

    2) ***GO HERE*** - Download these Chipset Drivers for your Windows XP operating system, go into add/remove if you have a version already installed, and uninstall them, then install the new ones you just download!, Restart when asked!

    3) ***GO HERE*** - Download these latest Creative Soundblaster Live! hardware drivers, hopefully this will rectify the IRQ to a better position! Remember to Uninstall your previously installed drivers.

    4) ***GO HERE*** - Download DirectX 9c (August Edition) and re-install it, this is just as an extended course of action, better to be safe than sorry!

    5) Last but not least, ***GO HERE***, to Windows Update and grab all the updates if you have not done already, do a 'Custom' install, becuase you can then check what drivers it 'May' want to install, if there is one for your chipset or videocard, de-select them, install all others however.

I am going to sit here and wait for you to do all of the following, and see how you go, I hope however, this fixes the situation, it essentially should!

Well this is either a driver issue or PSU issue

The 6600GT if it doesn't recive enough power will downclock its self, also check and make sure your mpeg codecs are working.

  25. EXOX3

    EXOX3 Staff Sergeant

    It does?

Hmmm I didn't know that, I know it would make the system act 'Weirdly', like any other card, but I never knew it would underclock itself, on my old 300Watt PSU it never did that to me, but It was struggling, when I upgraded to a 400watt, the problems corrected themselfs....

Yea I had a 6600GT AGP, if it decets its not getting enough power it downlocks to 200/300

I can vouch for this being correct, as I use the same card - not plugging the molex in gives doesn't give it it's full potential - however the latest nVidia drivers & software should inform you if it's not receiving enough power.

    WOW, OK

Thats pretty cool in a way, I am using the latest drivers off nvidia, I dont like them, they disable Fastwrites for some unknown reason, if I downgrade, to say 81.95 fastwrites is enabled, ahhh well, if its for stability it must be a good thing.

What program is there avail to check my GPU and Memory clock timings, just to make sure mines at the correct amount.

Also, does it clock down when it heats up dramatically? I live in darwin and unless the aircons on, IDLE my GPU is @ 66/68c (Celcius) avg using Windows....

Back to El Matador, I love this game, and until I can get my hands on Just Cause (Probably Nov) I`ll be hammering this game @ Med - 640x480 - HDRBloom off, runs nicely :D

I never got the "Underpowered" pop-up, and where is this Windows Flash Utility? I only found a BIOS updater in the ASUSTeK support site, nothign on a Windows Flash Utility.

    Hi Zorkman,

I thought I saw it their, just double checked and I read it incorrectly, you`ll have to use a dos boot disk or a Windows 98 Startup disk, just restart your system and make sure your chosen disks in your FDD.

Just download the new 1402 BIOS unzip that and copy it onto a blank Floppy Disk (Its just under 400kb), Download the Afudos BIOS update tool V2.11 and also unzip that to your new floppy, its about 20kb... So your new floppy disk should read exactly like this:

    Floppy Drive (A:\)
    A:\AFUDOS.EXE
    A:\K8VXSE14.ROM

Now put your say Windows 98 boot disk (The Floppy disk one) into your drive, and restart your system, going on the proviso that boot up floppy disk is enabled in your BIOS, your computer will be loaded, load computer 'Without CDROM support' when that option comes up while the floppy's booting your computer, when it finally gets to finished, take your boot disk out and pop in your newly created BIOS disk, then type in "AFUDOS.EXE" and follow the steps, you may need to input the BIOS filename, so write down on a peice of paper K8VXSE14.ROM, Also if asked to backup your old bios, DO THAT ASWELL!

If you are worried about trusting a floppy with your new BIOS image, you can do basically the same thing above, but just put the BIOS file and Flash program onto C:\BIOS\, so then at the command Promt type "C:\BIOS" and then type AFUDOS.EXE and follow on from there.

Hope this helps, remember to follow all the other steps I listed aswell afterwards!

I don't have a floppy drive on my machine so I'll do the c:\BIOS thing. I am inept at DOS or the Command Prompt so you'll have to tell me what Usage: afudos /i <rom filename> [/o<save rom filename>] means, and how I can use it. I've already tried inserting the filename into the designated area but it comes up with "Can not find specified path". Anyway, I will continue this later, I have to leave for the weekend. Talk to you all Sunday. Thanks for the assistance insofar, however.

    Thank you.

I'm back, and I fixed the problem! It was a driver error. Reinstalling the Drivers wouldn't help because they *were* the problem! I just rolled back to the drivers on the CD, and it worked.
Thanks for all the help you guys/girls, I don't think I could've done it without you.

    Hey Zorkman,

Good news that it is fixed, can I ask what drivers you are using, and could you do me a little favour?

Download say PCWizard or Everest and check the AGP, and see if Sideband Addressing and Fastwrites are Enabled? in PC wizard, it will say enabled twice, once for your BIOS setting, second for the OS, if its actually being used.

I don't really know, I just grabbed the CD, and pressed "Install Video Drivers". Didn't tell me version or anything.
Where do I find the information that you're wanting in Everest?
Just read the manual, says it's version 6. (This was at the very bottom of the manual, I don't think it's right, though.)

I just read a thread on another forum with the exact same problem as you so I came here to tell you how they solved it.

I see you have already fixed it, thats great.

Apparently the 84.56 drivers seem to help correct this problem with some cards. :)

Alright, the drivers from the CD were 69.93 and were made in 2004.
Where do I get the 84.56 drivers?

    Here you go:

Give them a try and see if they work with your card. :)

EVGA released these drivers for their customers who were having similar slow down problems.

Hopefully they will work with your card also.

If not, I guess you will have to stick with the older drivers. :(
