well like i said a cargo 747 lost its eng over lake Michigan well they reported that they had problems and it was not tell they landed that they seen that a engine fell off during flight.
Federal Aviation Administration officials believe an engine that sheared off a plane early Thursday may be resting at the bottom of Lake Michigan"We've heard reports that it landed in Lake Michigan, but we don't know that for a fact," said Detroit Metropolitan Airport representative Barbara Hogan.
Kalitta Air flight 825 was en route to New York's JFK Airport after refueling in Chicago when the number one engine fell from the plane, Local 4 reported.
The plane's electronics warned of engine trouble just before midnight, the station reported. Pilots were forced to make an emergency landing at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. The FAA and police are searching from Lake Michigan to the Battle Creek area for the engine, the station reported. State police have no reports of where the engine fell. "They are very big airplanes," said Hogan. A representative from the FAA came to inspect the plane at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, according to Hogan. She said the National Transportation Safety Board was expected to further the investigation. Three flight crew and two mechanics were onboard the 747-100 aircraft that was transporting merchandise from China to New York. No injuries were reported. Kalitta Air executives were meeting Thursday to review the plane's maintenance records and determine what caused the engine to fall. Kalitta Air, which is based at Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti, began service in November 200 with three jets. Eight additional jets have since been added to the fleet. The company is owned by local drag-racing legend Conrad Kalitta

i wounder if the engine injested a bird because that could cause that but wont know tell they find the engine not to be mean but i think it would have been funny it that engine hit a small boat on its way down what a catch that would have been.

A 747 engine might have been damaged by injesting a bird, but wouldn't have come apart catastrophically, and wouldn't have come off the wing. And it's not just the engine that departed, it was the engine mount as well, at the wing attachment point. It will likely turn out to be one of 3 things. Either improper maintenance at the wing attach area, defective or bogus mounting parts at the wing juncture, or a design flaw that showed up due to aging. Probably one of the first two.

yea but boeing made its jets have break away mounts so if the engine has problems that it does not bring down the plane it will let the engine fall off and not do anything to the plane

So I'm working down that way this weekend (Kalamazoo, right next to Battle Creek, where they first noticed "engine trouble"). Mom tells me I should keep an eye out for it. D'you suppose there's a reward if I find it? :D

Very true, in the sense that they're designed to shear before the stress load damages the wing itself. And as such, they're the "weakest link" at that area. They now also have breakaway fuel line connectors with valves that close on disconnect to keep from pumping fuel out in case of a loss. But Boeing would rather they not fall off in straight level flight. ;)

NTSB investigations tend to be slow & methodical. It will likely be a while before they announce any findings.

I find it a bit annoying that when Concorde had an accident, they decide to ground the whole fleet instantly, before the investigation had finished. Now this happens twice to 747's.

I know they can't ground all 747's (well, it could be done, but nobody will do it, there are a few more 747's than Concordes!) but it's sad that Concorde is now retired, I liked that plane.

thats because they had a flaw the fule tank was to thin a tire on that one was able to bring it down

And if another plane had been going down the runway and hit the debris? I think it was bad luck, nothing more.

The Concordes were losing money, and finding and implementing a fix would have been very expensive. People were already considering retiring the Concorde "fleet" (there were only a few of them anyway) even before the accident. Neat airplanes, but just not cost effective.

i know what you mean because the faa would not let them fly over land only sea they would have made more money and could have fixed them if they made more flights thin just from london to New York

Didn't forbid them from flying over land IIRC, just forbid them from flying supersonic over land (populated areas). Broken windows from sonic booms tend to annoy folks. But a 2000 mile-per-hour gas-guzzling hot rod had no reasonable place other than intercontinental. It was much cheaper to use lesser planes for other routes. Much cheaper to use 747s in intercontinental, too, but on the Concorde you were paying for the speed/short flight time. That's much less of a factor for shorter flights.
