I realize this may be a rather deep or broad subject (or both!), but I am very curious:

Is it logical (screenshot), that the "Recommended" and "Automatically managed" pagefile size would be different/vary from the "Currently allocated" size/amount - which is in fact, "Recommended" and "Automatically managed"? :confused

I understand you to be saying I'm 'not as smart (not as 'powerful') as yourself', yes?

I appreciate your "concern", but this is one particular "dragon" which I've poked time-and-again, over the years, and it has never seemed to be disturbed, previously.

I could certainly be wrong (again), but I don't think this equates to "poking" around in the Registry (which actually I have also done and done perfectly well enough - granted WITH online supervision - here at MG's and elsewhere), and which I was not asking about.

I have always fluctuated between the old "1.5x's" the amount of installed RAM number, with an equal allocation in "Initial" and Max" size, or, an equal amount in both going-by (setting them to) the Windows 'Recommendation'.

I am more-or-less at a standstill (for now) with trying to absorb any of this WIN8 nonsense...the curve in this new OS is proving long and difficult (for me anyway, though I know very well that MANY others share very similar- if not the very same - grief with this "OVERLY-Capitalistic Cartoon").

I had HOPED (I would like!) to fill my time, in the meanwhile, otherwise...tweaking where I am relatively comfortable in doing so...and simply asked a question (wasn't claiming to have discovered another Atlantis, nor claiming to be able to rebuild Rome in a day).

I come here to MG's to learn (and occasionally share, when I can/what I can, the little I have learned, that is, with those very few who actually know even less).

I certainly don't come here to be shoved into a corner and basically told to 'sit down and shut-up'.

Wow. I guess MG's is "changing".

Oh well...I suppose all things do...seems a shame, to me.

PS - Not a matter of being "smarter than an OS"...it's a matter of being POOR and not being able to afford all the machine which the likes of you can afford. I simply wish to get as much OUT of my pathetic little machine as is possible. That's all. Have a great life up there on your throne, sir.

I asked a simple question. YOU drew your assumption.

Windows automatically resizes your page file depending on how much of it you are using at the time. On computers with low RAM and small hard drives this was necessary. It is no longer necessary for 90% of computers but Microsoft keeps it in there for the 10%.

The only time you want to have the pagefile do what you want it to do, is if you have a huge amount of RAM, and limited hard drive space. Otherwise, turn it to auto, and Windows is usually pretty good in working the Page file as it see fit.

Thank you both very much. These, for me, are informative, helpful, "real" answers.

Exactly what I was looking for..excellent work....again, thanks much, to you both.

The other reason I would set it manually to the same size on older computers is because it really slows down the computer whilst it is resizing. I don't know if it still does as I have not had a page file resize on me in years.

That ^ : XP and earlier died whilst this occurred.

Vista onwards, 95%+ of users would do well to stick to defaults, unless their hardware/disk size is hopelessly outdated or being stressed above 90% regularly.

If you don't have a problem, let it be.

Thank you all very much...I only asked if it was "logical"..and said I was "curious".

Changing anything there would not seem to apply to me/my machine(s) anyway, so I am plenty satisfied with the explanations.

    Thanks again, much.

State of Illinois CMS purchased thousands of ThinkCentre M5 desktops, that have AMD 64bit processors, 250gb hard drives, running XP-SP3 on them, vs 7. Running in managed Pagefile, they actually run faster than the older Compaq desktops they had purchased four years ago, that were Intel Core-Duo 2.

Of course the first thing I did, was go in and turn off all of the sliding windows, etc, adjust the pagefile to managed by XP, defrag & disk cleanup, along with a few other items to make mine run a little faster than the others in the office, besides the Lan support group that did the same.

Got stuck on a old Dell 2.90ghz machine this past Monday, that I swear had never had disk cleanup or defrag ran on it, the whole time that it has been setup. Along with the keyboard was growing fuzz, due to the person that uses it, never cleans it, and that the drive from what I could see, only had 15gb available out of 40gb. Could not figure out without some deep digging, what was eating up all of the space.

I ran the degrag & cleanup on it, due to we could not get logged into it, when we set up temp shop at this office, due to our office had a power outage for the day.

Our Lan manager was not happy that that office slacked on maintenance on the machines, especially keeping the keyboards debris free.

As browniz mentions do leave your pagefile alone as Windows can manage this in the newer versions much better than it did in say XP, the only caveat to this is that I tend to on a PC with multiple HDDs or SSDs is to move or share the pagefile with those HDD/SSDs.
