We all remember certain events in out lives, what we were doing.

Today is one of those days.
    Where were you?

I was at work after just getting black balloons and funny cards for my 40th birthday. Sat down to work, turned on the TV sound on my radio, and heard the news.

I was home, turned on the TV and thought it was a (what if) type of scenario or a preview for a new show. It's just as horrifying to watch today as it was then.

I was in rehab and thought someone was playing a really sick movie on the communal TV. Now I know they were...only it was real.

I was watching NBC's Today show as I usually did ATT with a coffee after breakfast and sat there dumbstruck in front of the TV for 2 hours. The first plane was bad enough but seeing the second one hit live just freaked me out.:(

It was evening WA time when it happened. I'd been out and I was driving home; I turned on the radio, and heard a reporter describing the scene. I couldn't connect what I she was saying with the very unemotional manner in which she spoke. Seeing film of those planes flying into the buildings today I still find it hard to comprehend.
It makes me think of HP Lovecraft. Pardon the comparison, but he often described monsters from other dimensions that simply defied human understanding.

I was watching TV at the time. I think I stayed tuned for over 12 hours, watching all the events unfolding. Memories are still as raw now, for lots of folks, particularly those wounded or for relatives left behind. Bazza

Funny thing is I cant remember what I was doing just before I think I'd just had some dinner and flicked through the TV at home when I saw the first tower had been hit and then just sat there interested in how a plane had managed to hit that massive building,a friend had just drove up to see a neighbour "an avid PC gamer I might add which is how I knew him" and interested in planes.

I shouted to him "Dave "everyone in England is called Dave, its the law:D" "have you seen the news?" "no" he said "come in and have a look at this, a plane has flew into a building in America" he saw it said something like "jesus christ" we both stood there staring at the screen for 10 or so minutes ,he said something like "I'm interested in that, thanks I'll check it out when I get home" and left.

I then watched live as the second plane flew in and hit the other tower so you know the first isnt an accident,I'm not sure which order it was it but then "PENTAGON HIT" flashed up on the screen and then "AMERICA UNDER ATTACK!" and I thought it was WW3,I dont like admitting it but I phoned a few people see if they knew what was going on,probably at that point so I could speak to a few of my family before I was nuked.

That was the day I lost my favourite Aunt and Uncle - missing presumed dead, to this day. :cry Consequently today, I've tried to avoid reliving the nightmare. Not just for me. Too many lost too much, for no sane reason. :(

I try not to think or talk about it too much. My thoughts and prayers are with all those who have lost their loved ones, and in some cases physically and mentally scared and sick for life. A lot of people have become sick with 'Ground Zero' dust inhalation syndrome, for the want of a better term, too.

I was sitting at home surfing the net for package holidays with CNN on in the background when events unfolded (I wouldn't get on a plane for 3 years after seeing this)

My first reaction was 'what can i do to help?'. I just wanted to get over to the US and do something, anything to help, but what could I do ? :(

After a few hours, it really sunk in that the world we live in had changed for the worse. :(

Emotionally, to this day, I still feel sad for the victims and their families and I pray that they can all find peace.

I was sitting in my 3rd period high school German class. We had somehow found out about it and turned the TV on near the start of class, and then watched it for the remainder of class. The thought occurred to me at the time that we probably would be going to war over this; little did I know we would still be at war 6 years later... Some of my other teachers attempted to have class, but with the knowledge that there was potentially a hijacked jet plane (and the intervening fighter jets) going to be flying near my school, I had no clue if anything would get diverted our way and cause us trouble. Turns out it was Flight 93 and it landed hours away from us.

Sorry to hear about Phantom's loss, especially.

Same here Phantom...what a horrific event. Having visited the Twin Towers when last in NY I was dumbfounded watching its collapse and how the dust and debris enveloped surrounding buildings and streets.

At the time I was organising mum's removal from hospital to a rehab hospital while also in the process with other personal and family matters so was distracted when it was first broadcasted in the hospital discharge room while awaiting ambulance transport. At first I thought it was scenes from some Bruce Willis movie, then when it sunk in, I found it horrifying.

I was asleep (worked night shift then) one of my crew called and I heard his voice on the answering machine trying to explain what was happening and to get up and call him. At that point nobody knew what was really happening.

My son was 15 at the time. He is now 21 and headed to Iraq later this month.

I was in 5th grade at the time, during the middle of math class, the principal came to our room and called our teacher out to the hallway. She came back in and told us that 2 airliners had hit the world trade center buildings (at the time i thought this was the stock market building .) After I got home, I spent the rest of the evening glued to the tube. My mind was on War. I thought that some other nation had attacked us.

Sorry to hear of your loss phantom.

I remember I was at home, on the computer (had the day off from work) and around eleven my sister came in. She is the one who told me about it, her job had let everyone go home because they were afraid since they targeted the "famous landmarks" of NYC that they would do the same since Philly is so close (she worked near the Liberty Bell & Independence Hall). We turned on and were glued to the tv, We were shocked and appalled by the events that took place.

Phantom, I feel horrible and I didnt know not one person. I can not imagine actually knowing someone, Im deeply sorry for your loss.

First of all, Phantom, sorry to hear about your loss.

I remember that I was working as a server tech and someone came out and said that a plane had crashed. Not much work got done that day, As the Assistant Coordinator of Emergency Services for onondaga County parks, I spent the next few hours on the phone gathering staff to go down to NYC. We had a full team ready to go (4.5hrs away here) but were held in case somthing hit closer to home.

I have 2 cousins in FDNY, thankfully, both were off duty when it happened, but my younger cousin lost over half of his academy class that day.

While this is something that I feel we should always remember, I also have to state that I feel there comes a time when we need to move on. Remembering is good, but belaboring isn't, and some are starting to belabor it, and the belittles the memories.

I remember coming home from work and seeing it on the TV. At first nobody was sure what it was, the announcer was just saying a plane had hit the WTC. My first thought was 'That's a bit silly, didn't they see it!' thinking it was a light aircraft. If only...

It was a horrible day. Watched it Live when the one Tower started to literally collapse.

    Some stressful moments:

My father working downtown and us having no idea if he was ok or not. After about 3 hours of trying, we got him on his cell. Everyone was walking down streets trying to get as far as possible from them. He was ok.

My girlfriend calling me hysterical. HER father hadn't called in. He gets the train that stops directly under the towers at the time of the attack. He was ok.

A friend who was getting married in two weeks. She worked in one of the towers. She took off that day. We went to her wedding. Every single one of her coworkers...dead.

    Yep...I'll always remember.
