    Hi all

I built myself a PC last year...

It's specs as far as I can remember are:

    2800XP CPU
    160GB, 80GB HDDs
    512MB DDR ram
    Hercules 9700 Pro Graphics
    Compaq flat screen at 1024x768
    Running WinXP Pro
I know I have missed a million things so please ask them!

OK, Heres the problem - Every time I try to run a game, after a time between 10 minutes and an hour, the monitor goes blank and the green light on the monitor goes to orange (standby). The signal is not actually lost, since when I pull the plug on the monitor it THEN says 'signal lost'. I tried to fix this problem last year, going through about 20 different drivers, using 3 fans and a vacuum cleaner to make sure it was cool enough, changing motherboard firmware, underclocking the graphics processor, and generally trying to find the conflict!

I gave up last year and used the PC just for browsing, word processing and not playing any games. I really want to put my machine to work and thought I'd ask if anything new about this problem has been discovered. It is certainly not a heat problem and no artifacts have ever been spotted.

If I remember correctly this problem was acknowledged by ATI and they called it an "Infinite Loop Problem" that could be caused by a number of things.

Any ideas guys? I'm getting real desperate and have no money to consider a new card...

    Thanks in advance,

    Hacon

Found this as one workaround helps some not all!! (yanked from another forum)

    1. Download and Install Windows Media 9.5 Runtime

    2. Reboot System

    3. Download and install the DXVA WMV Update Patch

    4.Reboot System

    5 Should be working now..

    Hope this helps....

Tried a different monitor, same problem..

Tried a Geforcefx5200 or something card and works fine.

Sometimes instead of going blank it blue screens with IRQL not less or equal.... and reboots with "your machine has recovered from a serious...... graphics processor stuck in an infinite loop....."

ATI seems to know the problem exists too... https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge

I'll try the other fix next,

    Many thanks for your suggestions,
    Peace

I used to use nvidia but found a few games were 'incompatible' with it, and that you didn't get quite as much bang for your buck..

I've had problems with both companies so I'm not giving up on ATI yet!

As for power management, this was my first concern and I tried with gpu recover both on and off.. not luck :(
