98 install over 95?

I am looking at another pc that has win 95 and was told i can install 98 over it. Is this so and how can I do it. My sister want to keep the stuff in it and not reformat.

 

If she's determined not to format the HD and do a clean install of 98, well ...

all you need is the Win98CD. Pop it in, if autostart doesn't run it, go to the CD drive and double-click Setup.exe. The installation program will take it from there and "upgrade" 95 to 98.

It would be a really good idea to make backup copies of "the stuff in it" that your sister wants to keep before you mess around with installation.

You really oughta try to persuade her to upgrade to something a lot better than 98: 2000 or XP. You might point out that Microsoft no longer supports 98, so there are no new fixes or patches or security hotfixes.

Its a really old pc and has only 2 gig hd. She will only use it for email etc. with the 28k mo cant do much else I got the modem configured and she can get online but cant find a borwser. Since I dont have a win 95 cd and do have a 98 I want to try to install it over 95 if possible. At first she wanted me to put the hd in this old hp pc in her newer gateway which need one. Still not sure abut the mobo till I get a hd in the
gateway.

Right you are, doggie. I s'pose a new box is out of the question.

 

As I remember, when you upgrade from 95 to 98 it keeps all your previous settings.

And you don't need all those patches and fixes from MS as they only mess up your system. There are other ways to take care of security and optimize windows.
Besides, new worms/viruses are being mosty targeted at XP.
