I've got a friend with a Win 98 machine here at school. Our internet connection is via an ethernet network. I can't get his machine to recognize the network, even though the device is installed, it has drivers (albeit old ones), and he does have CAT-5 cable. Ideas?

Make sure you have a link light on the ethernet card. If you do not have link, check the cabling again. If that's OK, plug a different PC in using the same ethernet connections and see if you get link.

Are you sure you have entered all of the IP settings in correctly according to your school? You should double check this. Typing the gateway, DNS, etc. wrong can cause a network connection to be unresponsive.

Go to Start --> Run. Type "winipcfg" and press OK. Do you see your NIC listed in the drop down menu? If so, what is the IP address, etc. state when you select it?
