98 To Xp Upgrade

I am trying to upgrade a licensed windows 98 box to xp

hp paviliion 6330 which I beleive has at least the min processor.
Ram is 320
4gb hd

when i insert the upgrade cd and begin the process all is well until an error comes back- can not update I386( theres more but i didnt write it down and it hasnt gotten that far again.) click ok to that error and another one came up.
thought the win 98 install might have a problem but
the hp recovery cd which came with the box won't launch, says starting windows 98, plug and play device (with details) has been configured and then hangs

box did have some fatal exceptions at xxxetc
possible bad ram?
bad hd?

any thoughts?

My first thought is your HDD is too small for XP.

What speed is your CPU?
The Exact error message's would be helpful to know regardless your HDD is too small, you would be better off with 98.

 

Actually the box meets specs for xp and I did get it to install (had to change boot order so cd drive was first and reinstall win 98 cause it was corrupted)

BUT after the xp install, zone alarm install and maccafee install hd space was down to 450mb and I still needed ms office.

SO i got a maxtor 160 gb hd for 39 bucks. Win 98 installed from the recovery cd in a flash and xp upgrade is moving along just fine now.
