A call to folding

Apparently F@H is available for Android phones now. Unfortunately it's only Android 4.4 and up, so I'm out. Has anyone tried this out yet? I'm very curious as to the PPD and the points per watt.

I am out until house rennovations are done, too much dust to leave computers on.
I don't understand the hibernation thing. If you are running F@H you are doing work and the computer should not hibernate.
On a broader note hibernation has not worked all that well for any computers I deal with, just shut it off. No one has ever hacked a computer that is off so you have more security. Also off uses less electricity. With an SSD boot times are not an issue.

Because it's a laptop that overheats, as I said. I don't want my laptop running 24/7/365, especially when there are weeks when I don't use it for a day or more at a time even though it's my main machine. Security is irrelevant to the equation. And I do not have an SSD.

It's still in beta last I knew, only available for a couple of Samsung phones. But later this year it's supposed to be widely available for all Android phones.

Do folding clients often hugely misrepresent the amount of points that will be received if a passkey is used? I know a passkey increases PPD somewhat because of bonuses, but my client on my 2.5GHz i5 Mid-2011 iMac reports 8,000-9,000 PPD which is definitely not what I'm getting (according to folding.extremeoverclocking.com, my PPD is more around 4,000-5,000 and that includes 3 other Core 2 Duo machines).

  8. DOA

    DOA MG's Loki

Yes, their estimates are WAY off. Just let it run for three days without interruption and you will be pretty close to the estimate. You get bonuses for being dependable.

  9. Nico_Palm

The estimated PPD is usually calculated based upon the time per frame of the last 3-5 frames. Some frames also take longer than other frames within the same WU, so that can skew the estimated PPD quite dramatically sometimes. There was one instance where my PPD was estimated at over 4,000,000, but that was because I had shut down my client mid-frame and re-started it. So the frame only took 1/2 as long as expected which made my PPD shoot sky-high. In the end however, all scores are calculated on actual time, and the estimated points shown in the log after completion is usually pretty accurate.

Finally got a 770 installed and Folding is up and running on a GPU again. I have learned from past mistakes and am carefully monitoring temperatures this time around...

Back in the fold again :)

    Welcome back :wave

Not sure if this will be of any interest to you or not, but I may as well share it anyway for anyone who reads this.

Since the arrival of core 17 WU's, there has been a new feature for Nvidia cards running on Windows, called "Nvidia Temperature Control". Basically, Your F@H client monitors the temperature of your Nvidia graphics card, and when it reaches a specified temperature, the client automatically pauses for a specified amount of time. This may come in handy should your GPU ever overheat while folding again.

Here is what F@H has to say about it, and how to enable it.

    Core17 Release Notes:

-For Windows NVIDIA Users running on a single GPU, we’ve enabled a new feature called temperature control that pauses the core internally. This is disabled by default.

-To enable temperature control, a pair of additional arguments are required:

-tmax (maximum temperature threshold in Celsius), must be less than 110

-twait (minimum wait duration in seconds), must be at least 900

-if temperature > tmax, then the GPU waits for at least twait seconds

-these can be passed in via extra-core-args in the config.xml file :

    <slot id=’0′ type=’GPU’>

    <extra-core-args v=’-tmax=80 -twait=900′/>

    </slot>

Has anyone else noticed that the Chrome "NaCl" client gives huge points compared to the desktop client? I was pulling around 6K PPD for a long time and then switched over to the Chrome client on all the machines and my PPD literally jumped tenfold up to 60K. Do you think it's because of the shorter work unit completion times?

  13. Mimsy

Mimsy Superior Imperial Queen of the MG Games Forum

Fascinating. I wonder if I can run both...?

  14. Speculant

    Speculant The Confused One

Possibly. I'm sure it would make both less efficient though, the Chrome client is pretty efficient by itself. Unfortunately I had to decommission my folding machines at least for the summer (heat and all that) but attached is the effect of switching to the Chrome client on four 24/7 folding quad core machines. Pretty stunning, to say the least. Is this the future of folding?

    Whoa there.

Hmmmm... so maybe Chrome client and GPU client might work better. I'll wait for this WU to finish and then may give that a try. I am also considering installing the Folding app on my phone, since my phone is on the charger all night, every night.

    (Must. Catch. Speculant! :crybabyLOL )

  16. Speculant

    Speculant The Confused One

I definitely think that's the best solution for now! You'll most likely get maximum points with the combination of the Chrome client and the desktop GPU client. Is the phone client out of beta yet? I knew it was not a final version for the longest time. It might not be worth the stress on your phone but you can test it out. I would recommend setting it for half if you can and ramping it up from there, seeing how hot your phone is each morning until you reach a comfortable level. Anyways, I won't be folding all summer so you might have a chance to surpass me! Watch out when the temperature starts dropping though, I use my desktops to heat my house! :-D

  17. Mimsy

Mimsy Superior Imperial Queen of the MG Games Forum

Nothing in the app store description suggests it's a Beta app.

I'm going to install it, start slow as you suggested, and report back in a couple of days. I do like that they have taken measures to prevent battery death from over-folding ,by requiring both the battery at 100% and a connected charger. I am concerned about heat though, and will definitely watch for that.

Okay, as far as I can tell there are two major issue with the F@H Android client:

    1. Requires my Noted 4's original "fast charger" to work. The many after-market chargers I have scattered around my house are not recognized by the client, most likely because they are "normal" chargers that aren't powerful enough. Annoying, but no deal breaker.

    2. Not possible to specify user name and team number. This is an instant deal breaker for me. I found a subreddit that claims there are plans to add this in future releases of the app, and I really hope that is true.

For now, I have uninstalled the app, but will keep an eye on it for when I can fold on my phone and get MG points for it.

  19. Speculant

That's a deal breaker for me too. I would want to represent my team that I've been folding with for the past 7 years! :major

    Hey everyone!!

So I've had F@H running on 3 pc's around the house for a while now...whenever I post here last I suppose! For a CURE for CANCER and for MajorGeeks! (you all helped me out a lot a few years ago)

earning low but slow numbers haha

my buddy had a grapichs card laying around that he couldn't use anymore so he gave it to me, i put it in the computer and it seems to be running nicely. earning 7000 ppd at medium (idk if this can burn up a stock 3 year old dell PSU??) plan on upgrading that anyways. WHICH IS FREAKING NUTTS haha I have never seen numbers like that haha

    Good luck team!

8Ball way to go an from someone who work experimental medicine and research, we thank you all that devote time and PCs to these causes, while most if not all F@H is not dealing in my area of eyes, its always welcome.

After she kinda evened out its at like 5800 ppd. Still not bad! Probably worse on the weekends when I use it for more then 30 min a day lol

Keep folding! (all the badA icons are gone??)

One of my Christmas presents was a GTX-750! Wohoo!

I will install it tomorrow, since installing video card after several glasses of wine followed by the traditional annual Christmas scotch seems like a bad idea... :p

It took a little bit longer than planned to install the 750 (I blame Windows 10), but now it's up and running. Client has been reconfigured... now to monitor and watch the points roll back in :)

Just got a LGA1156 8 core Xeon on the cheap...going to see how far I can push it, right now I have it at 3GHz on the stock cooler but I'm getting a beefy aftermarket cooler tomorrow so hopefully 3.2-3.3GHz is realistic, should get around 5K with it.

Anticipation is killing me. First CPU job is over 99% complete. What comes next should happen in about 5 mins, Its been a nervous week
watching Speccy's temperature reports for CPU and GPU. Had a some warm days this week and was pushing 80 c on the GPU a few times.

Its nicer to do this in the winter, instead of summer. :)

Yup! Temps are running up there close to max on both CPU and GPU. Ambient has been cool this summer and haven't put in the window AC
unit, which normally sits next to comp. Trading AC electricity for comp runtime.:)

Only 2 high temp shutdowns this past month. Things got better when I placed a fan to blow into the side panel fan in the case. Just 163 on the MG team list, but we're still plugging along. Anyone else care to join in the fun?

I got up to 10th place in our team until I had to stop folding on my Xeon rig because it was using too much power and putting out too much heat, the Texas summer is about 100F on most days and running the Xeon folding box 24/7 relates to about a $200 power bill since the AC has to work harder as well. Maybe if I could figure out a way to route the computer heat out the dryer exhaust vent, that might work...

Well, I thought I was getting a new card coming in this week, but it got cancelled. Will try again soon. I was so looking forward to 800k PPD initially to getting close to 1.6 M PPD with two cards. Oh well, it will be soon. :) This would be on two 1080s, btw. For the price of two Pascal Titan X's, I thought 2 1080s was better, or perhaps a 3rd.

I tested Bitdefender Free 1.0.3.9 Beta a couple weeks ago. It interfered with folding new job downloads. Folding log showed http 200 server status code error. Found on folding forum this usually has to do with AV or firewall. I quickly eliminated firewall. BD wasn't showing a block, so I couldn't find a way to exclude folding. Thus, I uninstalled BD, reinstalled MSSE, and new folding came down without a hitch.

I wonder if any any folders with BD paid finals have run into similar problems. Caveat emptor!:(
