A caution about Bitdefender browser add-ons : new tabs can go crazy

  1. According to my research, there is a very strong case to be made that Bitdefender has the best anti-virus program at this point in time. However, their browser add-ons can cause problems.

The other day I was returning to a Mozilla-related browser I hadn't used in a long time, CometBird. I gathered up a bunch of my favorite Mozilla add-ons, including Bitdefender Traffic Light and Bitdefender QuickScan. When I restarted CometBird, the browser went crazy, making new tabs at the rate of about one per second. I had 280 tabs, all but a few new tabs, at one point. It was like a bad science fiction movie to see this out of control multiplication.

I figured out that add-ons were the problem when I put CometBird on add-ons disabled mode, and things settled down. I then tried disabling the add-ons one by one without stopping the new tabs attack until I got to Bitdefender QuickScan. I found it was the problem. I tried to keep Traffic Light without Quick Scan, but the new tabs attack continued that way.

At this point it jogged my memory that quite some time ago I had disabled Bitdefender QuickScan in Comodo IceDragon because it caused me some sort of problem there also.

    Hi

I agree with you in part in that many anti-virus applications can score well on benchmarks from VirusTotal and AV-Comparatives etc.

BUT and the BIG BUT is that its dependant on the DEF File that's used, so month by month the accuracy may be different per AV application, we can only judge effectiveness by our own vigilance and keeping a know antivirus and Antimalware application on our PCs, keeping the OS and apps upto date always and most of all safe surf and download.

I think your troubleshooting is perfect and to the point and shows that a multitude of apps "could" cause an issue.

I used Bitdefender total protection on windows 8 pro and it completely messed up my computer and I had to uninstall the product off my computer. I have now switched to mcafee total protection and I am quite happy with it so far.
