    Hello all,

I am currently working on my daughter's computer. Athlon 1800, Win XP Service Pack 1, 512 RAM.

This started with a simple matter. She cannot access her games at her Neo Pets site. She clicks on "click here to play" and nothing happens. I thought it was possibly a Javascript problem and updated that. It's running correctly in the background and there is no pop-up blocker to keep the page from loading.

That being said, while working on her computer, I discovered 2 other problems. I cannot access the help/support page in Windows and I cannot run system restore. Click on either one and I get nothing.

Here's what I've done so far:

Made sure the firewall was off in Windows.
Ran AVG. It found a couple viruses, but it didn't fix any of the problems.
Disabled everything in msconfig with no luck.
Currently running Spybot, but I'm not feeling very confident that will help.

Oh.....and I tried running Windows Update. It won't load either. It's just like tryihg to run restore.......nothing.

I'm thinking it's a spyware problem?? Any ideas??

    Thanks in advance,

    Al

Don't know if you've already checked out these items -

In IE go to tools >> internet options, scroll down to Java VM and be sure it is not disabled.

Right click on "My Computer", click on "System Restore" tab and be sure "turn off system restore on all drives" is unchecked.

In "Control Panel" go to "Administrative Tools" >> Services, and be sure the Help and Support service is set to automatic and started.

    Hi Al,

My Advice would be that since AVG "found a couple viruses" but it didn't fix any of the problems that it found; you should immediately go to the free BitDefender Online Scanner which is a fully functional antivirus/and malware removal product which offers a very thorough antivirus scanning and effective cleaning of the system's memory, all files, folders and drives' boot sector, as well as providing the user with the option to automatically clean the infected files.

It can take a little while to fully scan (usually anywhere from 45 min to 2 hours) but it is well worth it, in my opinion; especially since you say that AVG actually found viruses but didn't do anything about it! I generally use the online scan about once every week or so; because the Bit Defender online scan often and removes trojans, malware, etc. that other installed software seems to occasionally miss.

Note: If that does not work; since you say "I'm thinking it's a spyware problem" in order to receive the best possible assistance with your problem, you will probably need to post your question in the Major Geeks Malware Removal section. Good Luck!

You really should be keeping Windows up to date. SP2 has been out for nearly 2 years. That's a long time to go without any updates. There are a lot of malware problems they prevent.
