    Hello again,

Does anyone out there know of a good antivirus scanner that runs from DOS?
I have a PC (not mine) that will not boot into windows 98. My father and I believe it may be either a virus/trojan or just needs the registry fixed. just before you get the logon we get an error in Explorer and will be shut down message. The startup picture is there, but explorer shuts down. McAfee loads but that's all that does. The same thing happens in Safe mode. And the only way to access any files is through DOS prompt. Would like to know if there is a DOS antivirus scanner so we can rule out viruses if that is the case. Because I can't get into windows I haven't been able to run any scans. So I'm not even a hundred percent certain this is a virus, but knowing the owner, it most likely is.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Did you make rescue disks with Norton. I believe you can start computer with them and do a scan. You could also try booting up with Norton disk - that will sometimes work.

I've tried McAfee and AVG disks but I think systems are too different. I don't have access to Norton so haven't tried that one.

Duh. I'm sorry - could have sworn you said Norton in first post. I take it there are no rescue McAfee disk to try then, or they won't work.

As it turns out this guy's pc was just one big bundle of viruses and spyware/malware. I managed to manually restore some of the system files so I could get in to the desktop, which let me run some scans and install some antivirus and anti-spyware programs. I got a lot cleaned up, but before I could get everything cleaned up he took his pc back. I gave him the link to the tutorial in the forums, but I have a feeling he'll be back for me to do it all over again.:(

I think next time I'll charge him.;)

Sounds like we are all done here.
