a few error messages during scans

    Hi,

i have worked through the "read and run me first" sticky and all seems to be working now - such an invaluable resource that thread

    but

i did run into a few little snags along the way so i wanted to check if it was all good before i toggle system restore.

    The initial symptoms:
my firewall kept stopping 193828.exe (located in c:\documents and settings\trent\local settings\temp) from accessing just about everything.
then it was 489734.exe, etc, etc. Rightly or wrongly i deleted these files.

Then web pages didn't load properly; some programs wouldn't open (eg CCleaner); i couldn't access My Computer - Properties; internet explorer worked more than firefox but had a bit of firefox's theme background at the top; when windows first started i would have error messages from 2 programmes (logitech registration and nokia something) - neither of which i thought were supposed to be running on start up.

This happened around the same time i downloaded and installed Google's Picassa. Not 100% sure on timing of first problems.

I worked through the read and run me first sticky.
    Problems:
    Add/remove programs wouldn't list anything
    CCleaner wouldn't run
A number of the other scans wouldn't run or even download when i was using firefox, but i later thought to try internet explorer and then success.

superantispyware found something and removed. When i rebooted i got a message saying:
    winlogon.exe - bad image
The application DLL c\windows\system32\dfrgsort.dll is not a valid windows image.

After this things seemed good so i went back to the previous steps which now worked.

Malwarebytes said it was successful but i got the following message:
c\documents adn settings\trent\application data\malwarebytes' antimalware\logs\mbam-log-1010-06-13 (09-20-44).txt. Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have appropriate permision to access the item.

    Root repeal error:
eroor - invalid PE image found

Sorry if that's too much unnecessary info. I'm just not sure what's important and what's not.:confused

Am i good to continue on with windows restore toggle step or is there more to be done first?

Sorry i seem to have 3 logs for mbam - not sure what i did.

    Thanks heaps
    Trent Lane

I am not seeing any malware in your logs. What malware issues are you having?

    Thanks for the response.

I am not having any issues since using super anti spyware which removed 3 things.

So i imagine those things were the cause of my problems.

The problems were:web pages didn't load properly; some programs wouldn't open (eg CCleaner); i couldn't access My Computer - Properties; internet explorer worked more than firefox but had a bit of firefox's theme background at the top; when windows first started i would have error messages from 2 programmes (logitech registration and nokia something) - neither of which i thought were supposed to be running on start up.

It all seems fixed now, but i wanted to check that it wasn't hidden somewhere else.
Or that i didn't need to do more to stop it from redeveloping.

There are two things i would love to know:

Were the things that superantispyware removed the kind of thing that would have caused my problems?

Should i be doing the system restore step of the "read and run me first" sticky?

    Thanks

Since your issues have been resolved, I would have to assume that what SAS removed was the culprit

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
