    Hi all

Great forum. I have gone through the 'Read me' and it seems to have cleared the pop-ups etc but I have a few existing problems:

    - my desktop is still blank;
    - the start menu is empty apart from the various malware removal tools recently downloaded and a "windows restore" programme which I think was actually installed by the virus;
    - itunes is still appearing on my desktop for some strange reason and it is still recognising my music which is otherwise nowhere to be found as my documents etc are all empty.

I attach my combofix and MGlogs but unfortunately I cannot appear to find the others.

    Any help appreciated!

Hi there and welcome. I am currently reviewing your logs and will get back to you with a set of instructions in the next post I make to you.

You could not find the logs for MalwareBytes and SUPERantispyware because you did not run them as instructed. ;) I will have you run them shortly.

SUPERantispyware is installed but you did not run it! Please do so now after letting it update and then attach the log.
MalwareBytes <--- You need to download and install this. Run it and get me the log. (You can refer to the R&R for how to do this)

    Uninstall outdated Java.
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 17

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\18734900
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\18734900.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\20307764
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\pCMnAnUyWW.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\~18734~1
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\~18734~2

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

Run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.
Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop

    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor.
    • Allow the application to run and a window will open showing that it is TDSSkiller from Kaspersky
    • Click Start scan
    • It will run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    Hi Kestrel13

Thanks for your assistance. On the whole the system seems to be running well but the documents that were previously saved either on the desktop or in the folders are all faded and if I did not have the 'show hidden icons' ticked they would not appear. The quick launch on my tool bar doesn't seem to be available and there is nothing in my start menu.

I have attached the logs created from the previous instructions. Is there anything we can do?

    Many thanks, once again!

Yes, sometimes the malware will mess things up somewhat and I may have to send you off to the software forum however, there are still things to do here first.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\~18734900
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\~18734900r
    C:\Windows\System32\MPFServiceFailureCount.txt
    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB}]

    Note:

I am seeing conflicting results about a file I am suspicious about so let's gather more information. Could you please get this: pCMnAnUyWW.exe into a zipped file and attach it for me in your next post? To do this, see the below:

Please go to start > Run and paste in the following:

    log retrievable @ C:\collect.zip

Please go to virustotal and upload the following file for analysis, and let me know the results.

    • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\pCMnAnUyWW.exe

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    Hi Kestrel13

Many thanks for your response and your ongoing efforts!

I have carried out your directions and attach the requested logs from both CF and MG. I was unable to create a zip file containing pCMnAnUyWW.exe when I followed your directions in 'run'. I was also unable to locate a version of it in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\pCMnAnUyWW.exe to upload to virustotal. Is it still appearing in the logs?

That's better. Now... how are things running for you at this point? :confused

Things seem a great deal better, thanks! The start menu is still empty and all other files seem to be hidden (I have manually changed the properties in some to unhide them). Is this a matter for the software guys?

Yes. To further discuss in the software forum. :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

  12. dorkus5

    dorkus5 Private E-2

Ok I think we're good then! I obviously cannot perform the system restore issues etc as I cannot locate it but I have carried out the other steps. You are a champion!
